International scholar to advance digital literacy research at York U

York University’s Institute for Research on Digital Literacies (IRDL) will host Ana Kubrusly, a PhD candidate at NOVA University of Lisbon, for a research collaboration from February to April 2025. Kubrusly’s visit, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, is facilitated through York’s International Visiting Research Trainee (IVRT) program.

Kubrusly will collaborate with Professor Natalie Coulter, from the Department of Communication & Media Studies and director of IRDL, on a research project exploring kidtech and digital capitalism – areas critical to understanding the impact of digital environments on children and adolescents.

Kubrusly’s research focuses on the relationships between young people and digital environments, with particular attention to literacy, skills, well-being and digital cultures. She has contributed to significant projects in Europe, including the Youth Skills (ySKILLS) consortium. In 2024, she completed a research stay at the School of Communication, Media and Information at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (ECMI FGV) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she delivered lectures to undergraduate students and presented her work to faculty and researchers.

In addition to contributing to Coulter’s work, Kubrusly will advance her doctoral dissertation, “Digital Well-being According to Youth: Perspectives, Strategies, and Recommendations.” This project adopts a child-centric and mixed-methods approach to understand how children conceptualize, manage and imagine their own digital well-being.

“I’m thrilled to join IRDL and engage with the incredible work being done in the field of digital literacies and cultures,” Kubrusly says. “I’m confident this opportunity will be a gamechanger for my PhD journey.”

Kubrusly will also organize a workshop at RIDL focused on youth-centred methods for exploring digital cultures and experiences. “I hope it will be an opportunity to share and learn more about innovative approaches to understanding youth perspectives,” she says.
