York U’s VIBE105 earns national campus radio award for second year

York University's VIBE105 (105.5FM – CHRY-FM) has been awarded Best Community or Campus Radio Station in a Major Market for the second consecutive year by the Canadian Radio Awards. Announced in December by Broadcast Dialogue, the 2024 Canadian Radio Award Winners celebrate the industry's best across various categories, from news to sales and programming.

Selected by an independent panel of industry professionals, VIBE105 stood out among over 250 stations nationwide. General Manager and CEO Randy Reid was thrilled by the recognition, stating: “We’re beyond elated that our commitment to excellence and pushing the boundaries of community-led media has again been positively recognized by our peers in commercial and community broadcast. Being a cultural beacon for our communities is a role we take seriously, and to represent our communities as ‘best in class’ for another year is a testament to those values.”

Since rebranding in 2015, VIBE105 has solidified its position in media, emphasizing coverage of the Black/Afro-Caribbean experience. Operated by VX3 Exchange (Canadian Centre for Civic Media and Arts Development Inc.), the station has achieved significant milestones, including the launch of a film and digital content division and a popular YouTube channel with over one million viewers in the past year.

In addition to the top community station award, VIBE105 was also named runner-up for Best Major Market Imaging Production, a category it won in 2023.

Broadcasting from the First Student Centre on the University’s Keele Campus, VIBE105 is firmly rooted in the York University community. It is supported, in part, by student levy contributions from the York University Graduate Students' Association and the York Federation of Students, in addition to occasional work-study grants from the University. The station also provides experiential education opportunities for students, as well as people from the community surrounding the Keele Campus, to express themselves through media and the arts.
