York Psychology Clinic launches virtual family therapy programs

The York University Psychology Clinic (YUPC) has expanded its services to include a range of virtual, brief family programs.

Family therapy can be difficult to access due to its intensive nature and the logistical challenges of coordinating multiple family members. To address this gap, the YUPC is collaborating with researchers in York’s Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Health to design and evaluate more accessible services.

The YUPC has a long history of offering family-centred programs, including family therapy, parenting groups and single session solution-focused therapy. The new offerings complement existing services by expanding on virtual, time-limited services, and include:

  • The Brief Child and Family Therapy Program, a four-session model that combines guided family activities and video feedback to help parents better understand and strengthen family interactions. This is well suited to families who want individualized, tailored programming to support their child’s mental health challenges.
  • The Building Blocks for Child and Family Well-Being Program is a six-week virtual parent group workshop series. This program provides parents with practical strategies and tools to enhance their child’s emotional well-being and support positive family relationships. This program begins Oct. 20.

Beyond direct clinical service, YUPC is committed to the scientist-practitioner model by offering rich research and clinical training opportunities for graduate students in the Clinical-Developmental and Clinical Psychology programs.

With these new programs, the YUPC is increasing access to family-focused support within the York University community and across Ontario, while also bridging the gap between research and practice.
