Community-centric campus safety: York U introduces new security role titles

York University is ushering in a new era of campus safety through a community-centric model and updated security titles.

The changes include renaming security roles and updating unit identity to reflect the University’s commitment to create an inclusive and supportive environment for students, faculty and staff.

The shift follows recommendations from the Security Services Review, a comprehensive study launched in 2022 to reimagine safety services on York’s campuses. The final report emphasizes engagement, prevention and collaboration as key priorities.

One visible change is the renaming of frontline positions. Titles have been updated to demonstrate a shift in approach and practice, for example the title security official is now campus safety official. Other roles have been updated to emphasize community relations and crime prevention, reinforcing York’s proactive approach to safety.

To ensure the process was collaborative and inclusive with the broader York community were involved to participate in a naming campaign. Students, staff and faculty were offered the opportunity to vote on new titles, making the outcome a reflection of shared values.

The next phase of this initiative includes a campaign to rename York Security Services, the unit overseeing campus safety officials in the Community Safety Department. The new identity will align with the department’s mission and values centred around holistic services, community engagement, ongoing collaborations and increased transparency and accountability.
