{"id":11976,"date":"2009-02-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-06T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2009\/02\/06\/three-york-film-professors-score-international-festival-success\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T14:56:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T18:56:56","slug":"three-york-film-professors-score-international-festival-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2009\/02\/06\/three-york-film-professors-score-international-festival-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Three York film professors score international festival success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three York University film professors&nbsp;are having a &quot;festive&quot; February, with two world premieres at the 59th annual <span><span>Berlin International Film Festival<\/span> in Germany and a six-title retrospective in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.berlinale.de\/en\/HomePage.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin International Film Festival<\/a>,&nbsp;or Berlinale as it is commonly called, is one of the world&rsquo;s leading film festivals, with more public patrons than Cannes or Toronto. This year, the festival runs from Feb. 5 to 15 and&nbsp;packs more than 400 films into 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>York film Professor <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/hoffman\/hoffman.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip Hoffman<\/a><\/span>&rsquo;s latest production, <em>All Fall Down<\/em> (2009, HDV) screens as part of the Berlinale&rsquo;s Forum expanded program, a series exploring traditional image formats in the digital age. <\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"246\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" width=\"350\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"8\" border=\"2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20090206\/hoffman.jpg\" \/>Right: A scene from Phillip Hoffman's <em>All Fall Down<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The feature-length film is an experimental documentary that juxtaposes the lives of two people separated by 200 years but linked by a 19th-century farmhouse in southern Ontario. It explores the characters through a variety of archival materials: diaries, landscape paintings, photographs, heritage films, poems, phone messages, maps, historical re-enactments and songs that express the complexity of time and the politics of land. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, Hoffman was in Berlin for the screening of his 16-mm film <em>Kitchener-Berlin<\/em> (1990) in the <span><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arsenal-berlin.de\/de\/arsenal\/programm.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin Arsenal<\/a><\/span> festival, but <em>All Fall Down<\/em> marks his Berlinale debut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Film professor <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/greyson.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">John Greyson<\/a><\/span>&rsquo;s <em>Fig Trees<\/em> (2008, HDV) is showing in the festival&rsquo;s art house Panorama Special program. It marks Greyson&rsquo;s fifth visit to the festival. He&nbsp;previously&nbsp;presented&nbsp;<em>Urinal<\/em> in 1988, <em>The Making of Monsters <\/em>in 1992,&nbsp;<em>The Law of Enclosures<\/em> in 2001 and <em>Proteus<\/em> in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"249\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" width=\"350\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"8\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20090206\/FIGTREES_GREYSON_07.jpg\" \/>Left: John Greyson's Fig Trees is a &quot;doc-op&quot; about AIDS, pills and Gertrude Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cheekily tagged a doc-op (short for opera) about AIDS, pills and Gertrude Stein, <em>Fig Trees<\/em> explores the work of AIDS activists Tim McCaskell in Toronto&nbsp;and Zackie Achmat in Cape Town, South Africa &ndash; and is narrated by an albino squirrel, an amputee busker and St. Teresa of Avila.<\/p>\n<p>In 1999, Achmat went on a treatment strike, refusing to take his pills until they were widely available to all South Africans. This symbolic act became a <em>cause c&eacute;l&egrave;bre<\/em>, helping build his group Treatment Action Campaign into a national movement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Telling the story of Achmat&rsquo;s strike in song, and the larger story of the fight for pills on two continents and across two decades, <em>Fig Trees<\/em> performs musical and political inversion on the music and words of Gertrude Stein's 1934 avant-garde classic <em>Four Saints in Three Acts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Greyson and Hoffman will travel to Berlin to attend the premieres of their films and participate in artist talks and Q &amp; As.<\/p>\n<p>Their colleague, film Professor <span><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socialdoc.net\/kazimi\/ali_html_pages2\/1AK2Home.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Ali Kazimi<\/a><\/span>, who served as a director of photography on Greyson&rsquo;s<em> Fig Trees<\/em>, is being honoured with his fourth retrospective showcasing his work as a director. <\/span>Kazimi is a guest of the <span><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/2009.vibgyorfilm.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ViBGYOR International&nbsp;Film Festival<\/a>, running <\/span>Feb. 4 to 8 in Thrissur, India, which is screening six of his productions: <em>Narmada: A Valley Rises<\/em> (1994), <em>Shooting Indians: A Journey with Jeffrey Thomas<\/em>&nbsp;(1997), <em>Documenting Dissent<\/em> (2001) <em>Continuous Journey<\/em> (2004), <em>Runaway Grooms<\/em> (2005) and <em>Rex vs. Singh<\/em> (2008). Greyson&nbsp;and Kazimi co-directed <em>Rex vs. Singh<\/em>.&nbsp;The 30-minute video examines a 1915 trial where two Sikh mill-workers, Dalip Singh and Naina Singh, were entrapped by undercover police, accused of sodomy and sent to trial (see&nbsp;<em>YFile,<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/archive\/index.asp?Article=11001\" rel=\"noopener\">Aug. 20, 2008<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"221\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" width=\"350\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"8\" <em>Rex vs. Singh<\/em> were also shown at the Making Migrant: Dialogs Through Film festival in late January, organized by the <span><span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psbt.org\/general\/psbt_festivals\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Service Broadcasting Trust<\/a> <\/span>in New Delhi, India.
