{"id":16911,"date":"2011-05-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2011\/05\/09\/workshop-explores-approaches-to-the-quran-in-africa\/"},"modified":"2025-04-02T08:43:43","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T12:43:43","slug":"workshop-explores-approaches-to-the-quran-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2011\/05\/09\/workshop-explores-approaches-to-the-quran-in-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop explores approaches to the Qur'an in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past 200 years, the Qur\u2019an has been interpreted in diverse ways throughout sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Scholars from Africa, North America and Europe will explore the ways in which the Qur'an <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110509\/\/bluequran.JPG\" alt=\"Page from the Blue Qur\u2019an of 10th-century North Africa\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>has been understood and approached at a two-day workshop later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropology Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.yorku.ca\/anth\/zhirji\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zulfikar Hirji<\/a>\u00a0has organized and will host the workshop,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/special\/170826b_quran_workshop_program.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Approaches to the Qur\u2019an in Sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>,\u00a0at the Textile Museum of Canada May 20-21.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right: Page from the Blue Qur\u2019an of<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>10th-century North Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The workshop will bring together scholars and students \u2013 many from York \u2013 as well as artists and community members to examine issues concerning Muslim societies and Islam in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop is open to the public and free with admission to the museum. Workshop highlights include the following ticketed evening events.<\/p>\n<p>On the Friday evening, the Textile Museum holds an opening reception for its new exhibit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.magicsquares.eventbrite.com\/\">Magic Squares: The Patterned Imagination of Muslim Africa in Contemporary Culture<\/a>, from 5 to 7pm. Later, a panel of artists\u00a0\u2013 Jamelie Hassan, Hamid Kachmar, Tim Whiten and Alia Toor\u00a0\u2013 will discuss the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110509\/\/ArtHassan.jpg\" alt=\" Art by Jamelie Hassan \" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>intersection of their work with the richly diverse patterned imagination of Muslim Africa beginning at 7:30pm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: Art by Jamelie Hassan\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the Saturday evening, Abdel Kader Haidara, director of Mali\u2019s Mamma Haidara Library, will give a talk, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.textilemuseum.ca\/apps\/index.cfm?page=program.detail&amp;programEventId=154&amp;areaId=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Preserving\/Mediating the Word: The Manuscript Libraries of Timbuktu, Mali<\/a>. The talk will be moderated by Ruba Kana'an, York-Noor Chair of Islamic Studies. It will be followed by a musical performance by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/skillsforchange.typepad.com\/npa_arts\/2011\/01\/2011-waleed-abdulhamid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waleed Abdulhamid<\/a>, winner of the 2011 New\u00a0Pioneer Music Award, and his ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop is sponsored by the London-based <a href=\"http:\/\/ www.qs.iis.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute of Ismaili Studies<\/a>, York\u2019s Anthropology Department and Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies in collaboration with the <a
