The conference is organized by York\u00a0Professor Annie Bunting of\u00a0the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples at York and the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery &amp; Emancipation at the University of Hull in the United Kingdom, with the support of the Social Sciences &amp; Humanities Research Council of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last decade, the problem of modern slavery has moved from being a marginal concern to a mainstream issue, with trafficking in persons for the purposes of forced prostitution as the primary focal point. Other related problem areas include bonded labour, which includes child labour, \u201cclassical\u201d slavery and descent-based discrimination, forced labour for the state, wartime enslavement and servile marriage, as well as the severe exploitation of migrants and domestic workers.<\/p>\n<p>The conference hopes to connect emerging literature concerned with modern slavery and human trafficking with more established scholarship in the related fields of human rights and human development. It also aims to offer a constructive critique of key policies and programs that have recently been introduced by both governments and non-governmental organizations to combat modern slavery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110623\/JoelQuirk.jpg\" alt=\"Joel Quirk \" width=\"150\" height=\"136\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>In the first session, <strong>Joel Quirk (left)<\/strong>, deputy director of the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of\u00a0Slavery &amp; Emancipation at the\u00a0University of Hull, will look at \u201cCompeting Visions: Human Trafficking versus Forced Labour?\u201d Quirk is a Research Councils UK Fellow in law, culture &amp; human rights and the author of <em>The Anti-Slavery Project: From the Slave Trade to Human Trafficking<\/em> (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2011). He is also the United Kingdom <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110623\/JeanAllain.jpg\" alt=\"Jean Allain \" width=\"90\" height=\"120\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>representative on the International Scientific Committee of the UNESCO Slave Route Project. <strong>Jean Allain (right)<\/strong>, a Leverhulme Research Fellow\u00a0at the School of Law at Queen\u2019s University of Belfast, will tackle \u201cModern Slavery: From Human Rights to International Criminal Law\u201d. He is the author of several books, including <em>The Slavery Conventions: The Travaux Pr\u00e9paratoires of<\/em> <em>the 1926 League of Nations Convention and the 1956 United Nations Convention<\/em> (2008).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110623\/AustinChoi(1).jpg\" alt=\"Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick\" width=\"135\" height=\"144\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Speaker <strong>Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick (left)<\/strong>, assistant director of the Center for the Study of Social Movements\u00a0&amp; Social Change at the University of Notre Dame, will discuss \u201cTwo to Tango: Slaveholders, Mobilization and Social Change\u201d in the second session. He was formerly the national outreach coordinator for Free the Slaves, an international human rights group working to end contemporary slavery.\u00a0Rhoda Howard-Hassmann of Wilfred Laurier University will look at \u201cSlave Labour in North Korea\" in the same session.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110623\/AnnieBunting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"166\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>In the third session, York Professor <strong>Annie Bunting\u00a0(right)<\/strong>\u00a0(LLB '88)\u00a0of the Law &amp; Society Program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies and The Harriet Tubman Institute will talk about \u201cEnslavement, Forced Marriage and Modern Slavery\u201d. Bunting is currently directing an international research collaboration on forced marriage in conflict situations with historians of slavery and women\u2019s human rights scholars. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110623\/BenjimanLawrance.jpg\" alt=\"Benjamin N. Lawrance \" width=\"140\" height=\"134\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During this same session, <strong>Benjamin N. Lawrance (left)<\/strong>, the Barber B. Conable Jr. Endowed Chair in International Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology, will discuss \u201cForced Marriages, Marital Simulacra and their Perpetrators: Conceptualizing Protagonists and Process in West African Asylum Claims\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern Slavery and Global Inequality: Lessons from Global Justice <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110623\/ChristienVanDenAnker.jpg\" alt=\"Christien van den Anker\" width=\"135\" height=\"170\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>and Human Rights Debates\u201d is what <strong>Christien van den Anker (right)<\/strong>\u00a0of the University of West of England will speak about in session four. She is currently lead editor of the <em>Journal of Global Ethics<\/em> and director of the Migrant Rights Centre in\u00a0Bristol. Her most recent work is a forthcoming\u00a0co-edited collection on human rights and migration. Andrew Crane, the George R. Gardiner Professor of Business Ethics at York\u2019s Schulich School of Business, will then discuss \u201cModern Slavery as a Management Practice: Exploring the Conditions and Capabilities for Human Exploitation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth session \u2013 Research Methods and Case Studies \u2013 will feature <strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110623\/Karlee.jpg\" alt=\"Karlee Sapoznik\" width=\"130\" height=\"186\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Karlee Sapoznik (left)<\/strong>, a PhD candidate at York, talking about \u201cCocoa Trafficking and Hereditary Slavery in Mali: Investigating Omissions, Contextualizing Reports and Challenging Popular Narratives\u201d. Sapoznik is president and co-founder of the <a title=\"Alliance Against Modern Slavery homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allianceagainstmodernslavery.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alliance Against Modern Slavery<\/a>, a non-profit organization in Toronto. Darshan Vigneswaran of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious\u00a0&amp; Ethnic Diversity will look at \u201cMethods and Modern Slavery: A South African Case Study\u201d and Jonathan Blagbrough of the Children Unite in the United Kingdom will discuss \u201cThe Politics of Child Domestic Labour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the final session, Fuyuki Kurasawa of York\u2019s Department of Sociology will tackle \u201cVisual Representations of Modern Slavery,\u201d while Roy L. Brooks of the University of San Diego School of Law will look at \u201cRedress, Human Rights and Human Development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To view the conference program, <a
