The service begins at\u00a012:20pm\u00a0and all are welcome to attend.<\/p>\nAnyone in the York University community who met or worked\u00a0with Wendy Babcock knew that she had many gifts, lived with great pain and was a person of courage.\u00a0On Tuesday, Aug. 9, Ms. Babcock was found dead in her home. She was just 32.<\/p>\n
Today at 1pm, the University flag will be lowered to half-mast in memory of Ms. Babcock. There will be a candlelighting ceremony in her memory\u00a0at Osgoode Hall\u00a0Law School in the Mixing Area. The service begins at\u00a012:20pm\u00a0and all are welcome to attend.<\/p>\n
Left: Activist and Osgoode Hall Law School student Wendy Babcock At 9pm, there will be\u00a0a special performance\u00a0in her memory at the Buddies in Bad Times Theatre located at 12 Alexander Street, close to Allan Gardens.<\/p>\n \"Wendy was an exceptionally talented student at Osgoode Law School and an untiring advocate for sex worker rights,\" said her colleague and friend, York Professor Sheila Cavanagh,\u00a0coodinator of the Sexuality Studies Program.\u00a0\"Her work and commitment to Street Health was nothing short of inspiring and in 2008, she was given Toronto\u2019s inaugural Public Health Champion Award by former Toronto Mayor David Miller.\".<\/p>\n Cavanagh noted that Ms. Babcock\u00a0testified in court to challenge the injustice of Canada\u2019s prostitution laws and founded the Bad Date Coalition, a group that publishes information about dangerous clients and runs a hotline for sex workers.\u00a0\"Her goal\u00a0was to improve the lives of those who are underage, under-employed and street-active; those contending with economic and legal barriers to accessing services, resources and supports many of us take for granted,\" she said.<\/p>\n \"Her\u00a0spirit, her ambition and commitment to what is \u2018right,\u2019 \u2018good,\u2019 and \u2018fair\u2019 lives on,\" said Cavanagh.<\/p>\n

\nTonight there will\u00a0be\u00a0a memorial in Allan Gardens (close to the street by the Carlton and Sherbourne Street intersection). From 6 to 7pm, there will be a buffet style meal.\u00a0The\u00a0memorial service will begin at 7pm with\u00a0an Aboriginal ceremony of welcome and\u00a0a poetry reading. Speakers and singers will then\u00a0commemorate\u00a0Ms. Babcock and celebrate her\u00a0many gifts and loves.<\/p>\n
