Accompanied by their teachers, the students listened to two leading scientists\u00a0discuss their research,\u00a0potential discoveries and why they chose a career in science.<\/p>\n<p>This year's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gairdner.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gairdner Foundation<\/a> lecturers were Professor\u00a0Michael Rosbash, 2012 Canada Gairdner International Award Recipient, and<em>\u00a0<\/em>Professor Cheryl Arrowsmith, Canada Research Chair in Structural <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-176359\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2012\/11\/Rosbash-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Rosbash speaking\" width=\"368\" height=\"244\" \/>Proteomics and a member of the Gairdner Awards Medical Review Panel<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Michael Rosbash<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rosbash, a researcher with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and professor in the\u00a0Department of Biology at\u00a0Brandeis University in\u00a0Waltham, MA, has pursued two fields of research: studies concerning the metabolism and processing of RNA, and the molecular basis of circadian rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0his work delving into circadian rhythms \u2013\u00a0the built-in 24-hour biological clock that regulates sleep and wakefulness, activity and rest, hormone levels, body temperature and other important functions \u2013\u00a0for which he received the Canada Gairdner International award, along with his colleagues\u00a0Brandeis University Professors Jeffrey Hall and Michael Young. Rosbash's discoveries could lead to the development of drugs to treat insomnia, jet lag and other sleep disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Rosbash encouraged students to\u00a0pursue science as a career, but also told them of the importance of finding balance in their pursuits. \u201cScience, and life in general, is balancing means and ends. Like lab experiments, life is not about the outcome, but about the journey and process of discovery. Find something you love and you will be <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-176365\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2012\/11\/arrowsmith2-664x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Cheryl Arrowsmith speaking\" width=\"286\" height=\"442\" \/>much better for it, \u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Arrowsmith, a professor and researcher in the Department of Medical Biophysics in the\u00a0Faculty of Medicine at the\u00a0University of Toronto, is head of the Arrowsmith Lab and the senior scientist in the Division of Molecular &amp; Structural Biology, Ontario Cancer Institute and at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesgc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Structural Genomics Consortium<\/a> (SGC), a not-for-profit, public-private partnership. \u201cScience is a highly rewarding team effort. Be passionate about your research, share your data with others and you\u2019ll see the world,\u201d Arrowsmith told students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cheryl Arrowsmith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of her lecture, she demonstrated a portion of her work with the SGC which creates 3D models of proteins that represent potential drug targets. Knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of proteins involved enhances our understanding of the molecular basis of cancer and pharmaceutical agents that could impede disease processes. Arrowsmith encouraged students to \u201cplay\u201d with the structures as they are all available online at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesgc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SGC<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>Following the lecture, many of the high school groups stayed on campus for a presentation by York University\u2019s recruitment officers. Students also took tours of campus guided by York Student Ambassadors and remained on campus for lunch.\u00a0Participants were encouraged to fill out reply cards to be kept up-to-date about admission events.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture, which took place Oct. 24, is part of an annual event that brings high school science students to the Keele campus to hear lectures delivered by the world's top scientists
