A York University\u00a0PhD student and a contract faculty member have been awarded Fulbright Awards to do research in the United States. York\u00a0University will also\u00a0play host to a distinguished American scholar for the 2011-2012 academic year.<\/p>\n

\"DavidDavid Hugill (right)<\/strong>, a PhD candidate at York University, has been granted a Fulbright Student Award to study\u00a0geography at the University of Minnesota.\u00a0Hugill will be spending nine months, starting in September, conducting research for\u00a0his project\u00a0 \u201cUrban Indigenity and the Neoliberal City: Winnipeg and Minneapolis in Comparative Context.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jia Li, a contract faculty member in York University\u2019s Department of Language, Literatures &\u00a0Linguistics, has been granted a Fulbright Award to conduct research at Harvard University\u2019s Graduate School of Education. Starting this month, Li will spend nine months at Harvard conducting research for a project titled \u201cCross-border Literacy Intervention Using Integrative Technologies and Social Networking for Diverse Students in North American Inner-City Schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with a great deal of pleasure that I welcome Dr. Jia Li and Mr. David Hugill to the distinguished group of Canada-U.S. Fulbright scholars,\u201d said Michael Hawes, executive director of Fulbright Canada. \u201cTheir success brings tremendous credit to York University and to the Canada-US Fulbright Program.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"JessicaYork will also welcome\u00a0an American Fulbright Award recipient.\u00a0Professor Jessica Fields (left)<\/strong>, from San Francisco State University, will take up a Fulbright Distinguished Lecturing Chair.\u00a0While at York, Fields will conduct research for\u00a0her project \u201cIntimate Possibilities: Sexuality, Education, and Civil Rights in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Fulbright program is an educational movement based on the principle of scholarly exchange between the United States and other countries.\u00a0Operating in\u00a0more than\u00a0150 nations, the Fulbright program is one of the world\u2019s premier academic exchange programs.
