Enlivening their trips on public transit is<b> <i>Murder in Passing<\/i><\/b>, a trans-media \"whodunit\" written and directed by York University film Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/finearts.yorku.ca\/people\/faculty\/john-greyson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Greyson<\/a>. The riveting serial narrative, which launched on Jan. 7, runs to March 1, playing out on TTC subway screens and online.<\/p>\n<p><i>Murder in Passing<\/i> tells the story of a murdered bicycle courier in the fictional town of Passing, B.C. The victim is a transgender man named Mars Brito, played by York PhD candidate in film and women\u2019s studies alumnus Chase Joynt (MA \u201911). Looking for the murderer is the bike-riding Detective Epicene (Alexander Chapman), who is a transgender woman. Suspects include Brito\u2019s \u201ckeen green\u201d boss (Moynan King), his fianc\u00e9 (Erin Bardua), a chemistry professor (York theatre graduate Nina Arsenault (BA \u201996, MFA \u201900)) and the town\u2019s mayor (Arsin\u00e9e Khanjian).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/02\/ChaseJoynt_as_Mars.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-180945\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"ChaseJoynt_as_Mars\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/02\/ChaseJoynt_as_Mars.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>The victim is bicycle courier, Mars Brito, played by York PhD candidate in film and women\u2019s studies alumnus Chase Joynt (MA \u201911)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shot and edited film noir-style in moody black and white, the story unfolds in 42 silent, 30-second episodes. A new chapter is broadcast daily, Monday to Friday, on around 300 subway platform television screens. Episodes are repeated every 10 minutes and on weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Viewers can also follow the tale on the <a href=\"http:\/\/murderinpassing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Murder in Passing <\/i><\/a>website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLg3bmQtjtWHxlRD-NavCHOqc1j5NVJXF2\">YouTube<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MIPassing\">Facebook<\/a>. Online, each episode comes with a music video coda: a mock-opera soprano aria, created by Toronto composer David Wall and sung by actor Bardua, that offers a hint to help solve the case. Clues can also be found on the series' <a href=\"http:\/\/murderinpassing.com\/blog\/\">blog<\/a>, on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/murderIP\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0and in the daily commuter newspaper\u00a0<i>Metro<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Widely hailed as an iconoclastic queer cinema pioneer, Greyson is known for using cinematic tropes and infusing them with humour and pathos to explore serious contemporary sociopolitical subjects. His critically acclaimed productions include <i>Fig Trees<\/i> (2009), a feature-length documentary-opera about South African AIDS activist Zackie Achmat that won the Berlinale\u2019s prestigious Teddy Award; <em>Uncut<\/em>\u00a0(1997), a Genie Award-winning docudrama about censorship; and <i>Zero Patience<\/i> (1993), a witty screen musical that challenges AIDS orthodoxy.<\/p>\n<p>\"Murder mysteries have always engaged social issues \u2013 think of Ruth Rendell, even Agatha Christie,\u201d said Greyson. \u201cI'm excited to be working in this genre and using it to explore complex gender and environmental issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the plot line is invented, Greyson drew inspiration for <i>Murder in Passing<\/i> from real-life events and contemporary news reports. \u201cThe script evolved from a wide range of sources, especially news stories about cyclists, lesbians, gays and trans people killed in various cities over the past decade,\u201d he said. \u201cIt evolved into a larger meditation about the opportunism of green washing and the politics of gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/02\/detective-300x168.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-180946\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"detective-300x168\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/02\/detective-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>Looking for the murderer is the bike-riding Detective Epicene (Alexander Chapman), who is a transgender woman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>Murder in Passing<\/i> caught the attention of the media right from the start. Greyson discussed the project's origins, the larger social issues it addresses, and multi-platform storytelling in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/player\/News\/Arts+and+Entertainment\/ID\/2323115586\/\">CBC interview<\/a> shortly before the launch. At the serial\u2019s debut, New York City-based <a href=\"http:\/\/filmmakermagazine.com\/61947-murder-in-passing-transmedia-on-the-toronto-subway\/\"><i>Filmmaker Magazine<\/i><\/a> highlighted its innovative use of interdisciplinary,\u00a0interactive\u00a0and cross-media to engage viewers, and the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/television\/article\/1310845--murder-in-passing-is-a-whodunit-unfolding-on-ttc-subway-screens\">Toronto Star<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>hailed the project for taking \u201ca fresh look at what it means to make art for a public space\u201d. \u201c<i>Murder in Passing<\/i>\u2019s lensing of trans issues feels like a necessary social intervention,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nowtoronto.com\/art\/story.cfm?content=190891\"><em>NOW<\/em> magazine<\/a> in a feature story Jan. 23.<\/p>\n<p><i>Murder in Passing<\/i> was commissioned for the TTC screens by Art4 Commuters and Pattison Onestop. The project is also a SSHRC-supported case study advancing Greyson\u2019s work within the <a href=\"http:\/\/futurecinema.ca\/\">Future Cinema Lab<\/a>, a research collective based in York\u2019s Faculty of Fine Arts that looks at how new digital storytelling techniques are transforming a diverse array of state-of-the-art screens. Greyson co-founded the lab with his film department colleague, Canada Research Chair Janine Marchessault, who is a co-investigator on the SSHRC project.<\/p>\n<p>Greyson and Marchessault\u2019s study will analyze the reception of <i>Murder in Passing<\/i> within the hectic environment of Toronto\u2019s 60 subway platforms and a potential audience of more than one million riders daily. Reception will be qualitatively measured via a variety of online and social media avenues and in-person interviews. While many mass transit art projects have included short films, to date there has been little exploration of the possibility of running a sustained series on an urban screen network \u2013 making this a groundbreaking public art project in a global context.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/02\/NinaArsenault_as_the_Chemist.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-180947\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"NinaArsenault_as_the_Chemist\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/02\/NinaArsenault_as_the_Chemist.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>A\u00a0suspect in the murder of the bike courier is Erin Bardua, a chemistry professor played by York theatre graduate Nina Arsenault (BA \u201996, MFA \u201900)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Greyson and Marchessault plan to disseminate their findings at upcoming conferences including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativecity.ca\/network-activities\/events\/2013-summit.php\">Creative City Summit<\/a> in Ottawa (May 29-31), where Marchessault will give a keynote presentation. And <i>Murder in Passing<\/i> will engage a whole new audience in the next few months, as Art4Commuters and Pattison Onestop will be rolling it out to commuters on Edmonton\u2019s light rail transit.
