\"safertogether3\"<\/a>York University has a new safety application for smartphone users.<\/p>\n

The application, or \"app\", is the result of months of\u00a0work involving developers\u00a0collaborating with York University\u2019s Community Safety Council and representatives from Communications & Public Affairs and the Office of the Vice-President Finance & Administration.<\/p>\n

The result is a full-featured, responsive application that meets the diverse needs of the York U community.<\/p>\n

On Jan. 30, as part of a community safety update meeting,\u00a0York President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri unveiled the new mobile safety application, which is just one element of the larger York University\u00a0safety awareness campaign \u2013\u00a0Safer Together.<\/p>\n

The free application can be\u00a0downloaded from a QR Code (see below), which is also\u00a0available for download through\u00a0the York U Safety<\/a> website and from a QR code on posters\u00a0found on\u00a0the Keele campus.<\/p>\n

The York U safety\u00a0application is available for\u00a0iPhone and\u00a0Android devices, and offers emergency information and tools for faculty, staff and students. A BlackBerry version will be released in the upcoming weeks.<\/p>\n

The app's key features include the ability\u00a0for the user to make direct calls to York University\u2019s Security Services and\/or\u00a0911 emergency services. It\u00a0includes a photo feature and a flashlight\u00a0so\u00a0a user can\u00a0take a picture of a \"safety.yorku.ca_mobileapp\"<\/a>safety concern and send it to the University's Security Services.<\/p>\n

As well, the Safer Together app\u00a0includes links to campus maps, goSAFE and Village Shuttle information, and information\u00a0about the Centre for Human Rights and the Sexual Assault Survivors Support Line & Leadership\u00a0(SASSL).<\/p>\n

The application also comes with a loud alarm that gives community members who are concerned about their safety a way to draw attention to themselves.<\/p>\n

The parameters for the app were developed by the Safety Initiatives Working Group of York U\u2019s Community Safety Council, a volunteer group comprised of student, faculty and staff representatives.<\/p>\n
