{"id":191160,"date":"2013-08-25T18:13:18","date_gmt":"2013-08-25T22:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=191160"},"modified":"2025-04-02T09:45:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T13:45:06","slug":"lassonde-professor-wins-best-paper-award-at-national-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2013\/08\/25\/lassonde-professor-wins-best-paper-award-at-national-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Lassonde professor wins best paper award at national conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><\/strong>A paper produced by a\u00a0 professor\u00a0 in York University's Lassonde School of Engineering recently won one\u00a0of three best paper awards in the recent CANCAM 2013 conference\u00a0organized by the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-191161\" style=\"margin: 8px\" alt=\"GeorgeZhuLassonde\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2013\/08\/GeorgeZhuLassonde.jpg\" width=\"304\" height=\"137\" \/>The paper \u201cDeformed Carbon Nanotube Junction and its Effect on Electrical\u00a0Conductivity of Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites\u201d was presented by\u00a0<strong>George Zhu (left)<\/strong>, a professor in Lassonde's\u00a0Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The paper develops a new model to explain the mechanism of tunneling\u00a0resistance at the carbon nanotube crossed junction in a percolating\u00a0network formed by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are homogeneously\u00a0dispersed in polymers. By dispersing the CNTs into the electrically\u00a0insulator \u2013 polymer, the electrical conductivity of the\u00a0nanocomposite can be tailored while improving its mechanical properties simultaneously\u00a0to create a multi-functional smart material. The potential application\u00a0of this type of new material includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self-structural health monitoring of aerospace structures (the\u00a0electrical conductivity is proportional to applied stress).<\/li>\n<li>Attenuation of lightning strike experienced by aircraft in while in flight.<\/li>\n<li>Use in the next generation lightweight electronics enclosures capable of\u00a0electromagnetic interference shielding for spacecraft.<\/li>\n<li>Dissipation of static electricity accumulation in lightweight\u00a0structure of aircraft and\/or spacecraft made of polymer composites.<\/li>\n<li>A new type of conductive polymers for commercial and consumer\u00a0electronics such as cellphones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CANCAM is organized by the Canadian Society for Mechanical\u00a0Engineering once every two years and attracts engineers, applied\u00a0mathematicians and scientists to a its program. It\u00a0provides an international forum for communicating recent and projected\u00a0advances in all fields of applied
