\"TheGreg Grandin, professor of history at New York University who writes on United States foreign policy, Latin America, genocide and human rights, will deliver this year\u2019s Michael Baptista Lecture based on his new book, The Empire of Necessity: Slavery, Freedom, and Deception in the New World<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n

The lecture, Who Ain't a Slave, will take place Wednesday, March 26 at 6pm<\/b> in the Sandra Faire and Ivan Fecan Theatre, Keele campus. It is presented by The Centre for Research on Latin America & the Caribbean (CERLAC)<\/a>\u00a0and the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples<\/a>. Everyone is welcome to attend.<\/p>\n

Greg Grandin<\/p><\/div>\n

Grandin\u2019s new book, The Empire of Necessity<\/i>, is a reconstruction of the events that inspired Herman Melville\u2019s novella Benito Cereno<\/i>, which was published just before the US Civil War and takes place on a Spanish slave ship shortly after its arrival in the bay of a remote island off the coast of southern Chile. The Empire of Necessity<\/i> explores the meaning of encounters between empires for slavery in all of the Americas during the Age of Revolution.\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n

Grandin, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is the author of several prize-winning books, including Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford\u2019s Forgotten Jungle City<\/i> (Metropolitan, 2009). A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History, as well as for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, Fordlandia<\/i> was picked by the New York Times<\/i>, New Yorker<\/i>, Boston Globe<\/i>, Chicago Tribune<\/i> and NPR<\/i> for their \u201cbest of\u201d lists, and\u00a0Amazon.com<\/a>\u00a0named it the best history book of 2009.<\/p>\n
