{"id":204201,"date":"2014-06-17T14:00:33","date_gmt":"2014-06-17T18:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=204201"},"modified":"2025-04-02T10:01:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T14:01:15","slug":"professor-wins-humboldt-research-fellowship-for-work-on-nostalgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2014\/06\/17\/professor-wins-humboldt-research-fellowship-for-work-on-nostalgia\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor wins Humboldt Research Fellowship for work on nostalgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>York humanities Professor Sylwia Chrostowska has won a Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to further pursue her research on nostalgia.<\/p>\n<p>The fellowship is an honour reserved for highly qualified scholars selected solely on the basis of their academic qualifications and evaluated in a peer-review process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes it possible for me to devote a part of the year over a period of three years to a large project in European intellectual history on the critical entwinement of nostalgia and utopia in 19th- and 20th-century German and French thought,\u201d says Chrostowska, a professor in York's Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_204205\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-204205\" class=\"size-full wp-image-204205\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/06\/Sylwia-Chrostowska-photo-by-WL-Marks.jpg\" alt=\"Sylwia Chrostowska, photo by WL Marks\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-204205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sylwia Chrostowska, photo by WL Marks<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Through the fellowship, she will spend a part of three years in Germany and France working on her book\u00a0<em>Nostalgia: Culture, Critique, Capital<\/em>, which \u201cargues for a historical link between a discursive mode of thought (critical philosophy) and a mode of experience (nostalgia) in light of shifting conceptions of history and time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her aim is to investigate nostalgia as a philosophical and critical category under consumer capitalism. The eventual book will trace the modern experience of nostalgia and its transformation by mass consumption, as it became imprinted in German and French critical philosophy and social theory over the past two centuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving from the nostalgic mode of philosophizing dominant in the German tradition to its juxtaposition with the predominantly utopian mode in the French tradition of the same period, the study brings out the interrelation between the two affective-reflective modes of relating to time \u2013 with idealized pasts as objects of <em>nostalgic<\/em>, and imagined futures as objects of <em>utopian<\/em> longing,\u201d says Chrostowska.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnimating my work on nostalgia as a fundamental modality of modern thought,\u201d she explains, \u201cis the need to recuperate it \u2013 alongside utopianism \u2013 as a way of registering a need for, and of re-envisioning, the world as different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chrostowska is the author of <em>Permission <\/em>(Dalkey Archive Press, 2013) and <em>Literature on Trial <\/em>(University of Toronto Press, 2012). She has also contributed widely to scholarly journals, among them <em>diacritics<\/em>,<em> New German Critique<\/em>, <em>New Literary History<\/em>, <em>SubStance<\/em>, <em>Telos<\/em>, and <em>boundary 2<\/em> (forthcoming). Her short literary work is scattered across publications such as <em>The Review of Contemporary Fiction<\/em>,<em> Stand Magazine<\/em>, <em>New Quarterly<\/em> and <em>Exile Quarterly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Chrostowska\u2019s host in Germany, Professor Joseph Vogl of the Humboldt University of Berlin, is the author and co-author of many books, including the 2013 <em>Das<\/em> <em>Gespenst des Kapitals <\/em>(<em>The Spectre of Capital<\/em>) and <em>Soll und Haben <\/em>(<em>Credit and Debit<\/em>, co-written with Alexander Kluge), both translated into French.
