Three York grads took home Toronto\u2019s most prestigious awards in theatre, dance and opera productions at the 35th<\/span>\u00a0annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards June 23.<\/p>\n

Among the highlights, York University was well represented in Sultans of the Street<\/em>, winner of Outstanding New Play in the Theatre for Young Audiences Division.<\/p>\n

Written by Anusree Roy (BFA \u201906), Sultans<\/em> is set in Kolkata, India, where four children of varying social backgrounds find themselves begging on the streets. The play was directed by former York student Nina Lee Aquino, with Michelle Ramsay (BFA \u201997) on lighting design. The play starred York theatre alumni Colin Doyle (BFA \u201901) and Richard Lee (BFA \u201900).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was terrifying to put a piece of your soul out there, but I\u2019m so grateful to have my people\u2019s story on stage and to work with the people I worked with,\u201d Roy said.<\/p>\n

This was Roy\u2019s fourth Dora win. The award-winning playwright and actor said she never doubted her ability to work professionally in theatre.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I didn\u2019t get into acting, I cried and cried. I was devastated. But I\u2019ve been performing and acting since I was five years old; I knew I would get here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Doyle, who picked up his first Dora Award for outstanding individual performance in Sultans<\/em>, credited Roy for creating a \u201cpretty special play\u201d for young audiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cI badly wanted to work with this group of people \u2013 it was a very special night for York grads at the awards ceremony,\u201d he said. \u201cActing for young audiences is the most political theatre, arguably. If you are not good, they\u2019ll tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

A busy actor, producer and writer, Doyle said the training he received at York University has served as a solid foundation for his accomplishments. His class of 12 people at the time consisted of talented personalities who are now successful on television or in theatre. Among them, Hollywood actress Rachel McAdams.<\/p>\n

\u201cYork was a very special time and place for me,\u201d Doyle said. \u201cEvery one of my classmates played an important part of my education at York \u2013 we are all still very close.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aside from celebrating with colleagues and former Yorkies who worked on Sultans<\/em>, Ramsay, a veteran lighting designer, won her fifth Dora in the Independent Theatre Division for Sister Mary\u2019s a Dyke?!<\/em>, a comedic drama about a young girl\u2019s journey as she uncovers the truth about her all-girls Catholic boarding school. She was also nominated in the same category for The Wanderers<\/em>, an epic tale of a family transplanted from war-torn Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\u201cLighting design is an amazing part of theatre. It changes your emotion without you even knowing why or how,\u201d Ramsay said.<\/p>\n

Even though she has been working in theatre since she was teenager, Ramsay didn\u2019t become a full-time designer until about 10 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made a lot of amazing contacts at York,\u201d she said. \u201cMy advice to new grads is to get out there and see as much as you can and volunteer. My first 10 gigs were not paid, but it got my name out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several other York grads were nominated for this year\u2019s Dora Awards. They include: Richard Rose (BFA \u201978) for Outstanding Direction, A God in Need of Help<\/em>; Weyni Mengesha (BFA \u201905) for Outstanding Direction, Lungs<\/em>; Thomas Ryder Payne (BA \u201995) for Outstanding Sound Design\/Composition, The Gay Heritage Project<\/em>; Jason Hand (BFA \u201905) for Outstanding Lighting Design, Figaro\u2019s Wedding<\/em>; Arun Srinivasan (BFA \u201994) for Outstanding Lighting Design, NeoIndigenA;<\/em> and Santee Smith (MA \u201904) for Outstanding Performance \u2013 Female, NeoIndigenA<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
