{"id":210550,"date":"2014-11-04T21:27:42","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T02:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=210550"},"modified":"2025-04-02T10:07:01","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T14:07:01","slug":"osgoode-conference-looks-at-corruption-and-what-to-do-about-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2014\/11\/04\/osgoode-conference-looks-at-corruption-and-what-to-do-about-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Osgoode conference looks at corruption and what to do about it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>York University\u2019s Osgoode Hall Law School will host a major conference that will look at corruption in business, finance, government and enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding and Taming Public and Private Corruption in the 21st Century will take place Thursday, Nov. 6, from 9am to 5pm, and Friday, Nov. 7, from 9am to 1pm, at 1005 Moot Court, Ignat Kaneff Building, Osgoode Hall Law School, Keele campus.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-210552\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/11\/Osgoode-corruption-conference-poster.jpg\" alt=\"Osgoode corruption conference poster\" width=\"350\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2014\/11\/Osgoode-corruption-conference-poster.jpg 808w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2014\/11\/Osgoode-corruption-conference-poster-400x218.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>The conference will bring together top Canadian and international legal, political and media experts to explore what makes these sectors vulnerable to corruption, the systems that undermine anti-corruption intentions, and the failures of transparency and accountability efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorruption is not only a major problem for developing countries, it is also a critical issue for Canada in 2014,\u201d said Professor Fran\u00e7ois Tanguay-Renaud, director of Osgoode\u2019s Jack &amp; Mae Nathanson Centre on Transnational Human Rights, Crime and Security, which is hosting the conference in partnership with the <em>Osgoode Hall Law Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past few years, there have been many disturbing high-profile cases of corruption that have garnered considerable media attention, generated public inquiries and led to unprecedented court cases,\u201d Tanguay-Renaud said. \u201cThese events have demonstrated that no level of government, agency or corporation is immune from corruption schemes. This conference will reflect critically on some of those experiences and responses to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference is co-chaired by Ron Atkey, adjunct professor of National Security at Osgoode; Margaret Beare, professor of law and sociology at Osgoode and York; and Cynthia Williams, professor of law and Osler Chair in Business Law at Osgoode.<\/p>\n<p>Key themes that will be explored at the conference include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>corruption in undermining international economic development;<\/li>\n<li>corruption as a facilitator of organized crime;<\/li>\n<li>corrupt interactions between business and government;<\/li>\n<li>corruption within government institutions;<\/li>\n<li>the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC);<\/li>\n<li>the Foreign Corrupt Practices Acts and their extra-terrestrial reach; and<\/li>\n<li>the adequacy of whistle-blowing legislation, policies and practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The keynote speaker will be John Sandage, director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime\u2019s Division for Treaty Affairs. In addition, leading thinkers on corruption will participate in panel discussions that will analyze recent domestic and transnational events in Canada and abroad from a wide variety of cutting-edge legal, sociological and political perspectives, and propose constructive ways forward.<\/p>\n<p>Among the speakers, Julian Sher, senior producer at CBC\u2019s \"the fifth estate,\" and John Ibbitson and Adam Radwanski, both of the <em>Globe and Mail<\/em>, will present on the media\u2019s role in exposing corruption and responsibilities of the media generally to accurately report levels and types
