{"id":224321,"date":"2015-10-31T20:16:19","date_gmt":"2015-11-01T00:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=224321"},"modified":"2025-04-02T10:23:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T14:23:37","slug":"third-talk-in-capitalist-mode-of-power-series-takes-place-nov-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2015\/10\/31\/third-talk-in-capitalist-mode-of-power-series-takes-place-nov-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Third talk in Capitalist Mode of Power series takes place Nov. 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Capitalist Mode of Power\u00a0<\/strong>is a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>speaker series that explores the concept of capitalism as a mode of power and its role in the current global crisis; its impact on the distribution of income and corporate concentration, its role in public debt, Hollywood and the operation of the \u201cmarket\u201d.\u00a0The purpose of this speaker series is to interrogate capitalism as a mode of power.<\/p>\n<p>The talks started Oct. 20\u00a0and continue until\u00a0Nov. 17 and are organized by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalaspower.com\/\">The Forum on Capital as Power<\/a>\u00a0and sponsored by the York Department of Political Science and the Graduate Program in Social &amp; Political Thought. All\u00a0talks take place Tuesdays from\u00a0<strong>3<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>5pm<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Verney Room<\/strong>, 674 South Ross, Keele Campus, and\u00a0are open to the public. It is presented by\u00a0James McMahon (<a href=\"mailto:jmcmahon@yorku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jmcmahon@yorku.ca<\/a>), a PhD student at the Graduate Program in Social and Political Thought at York University.<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood is obsessed with blockbusters \u2013 for 20 years the major studios have been making them, and it appears that blockbuster cinema will be with us for many years to come. McMahon's presentation will theoretically and empirically explain how blockbusters, and the associated business strategies that surround them, serve Hollywood\u2019s financial goals. The key to blockbusters is that they allow major studios to reduce their risk. The revenues of designed-to-be blockbusters rarely fall below expectations, making the world of cinema increasingly predictable.
