The McLaughlin College Lunch Talk Series continues on Nov. 16 with a presentation called \u201cGoverning Refugee Movement in Europe: Borders of Shame\u201d by Elspeth Guild.<\/p>\n

Elspeth Guild<\/p><\/div>\n

The event, running noon to 1:30pm in the Senior Common Room, 140 McLaughlin College, will explore the topic of border controls among the EU member states and associated member states.<\/p>\n

The European project is based on the abolition of these border controls, but the focus has now shifted to common external borders with both positive and negative representations. For instance, the border is seen as a fortress which keeps the \u201cwrong\u201d people out \u2013 but who are the \u201cwrong\u201d people? And what is the difference between the welcomed visitor and the unwanted migrant?<\/p>\n

These questions will be examined during the talk.<\/p>\n

Guild is a Jean Monnet Professor ad Personam in Law at Queen Mary University of London and the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She retains her affiliation as a partner at the London law firm Kingsley Napley. She is also a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies,\u00a0a Brussels-based think-tank. Guild regularly advises EU institutions on migration- and asylum-related matters, including the Council of Europe\u2019s Commissioner for Human Rights.<\/p>\n
