{"id":235690,"date":"2016-10-25T20:33:55","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T00:33:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=235690"},"modified":"2025-04-03T13:51:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T17:51:41","slug":"inaugural-york-world-scholars-program-attracts-top-students-from-around-the-globe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2016\/10\/25\/inaugural-york-world-scholars-program-attracts-top-students-from-around-the-globe\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural York World Scholars program attracts top students from around the globe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/laps.yorku.ca\/york-world-scholars\/\">York World Scholars<\/a> (YWS) program is attracting extraordinary international students for a unique experience in the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies (LA&amp;PS).<\/p>\n<p>Designed for international students of exceptional merit, the program offers the opportunity to pursue a double major \u2014 a combination of two programs resulting in a distinctive degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to attract exceptional individuals who are motivated to explore their academic passions, lead global change and pursue unique career aspirations,\u201d says LA&amp;PS Dean Ananya Mukherjee-Reed.<\/p>\n<p>For its inaugural year in 2016-17, YWS recruited four outstanding students who chose specific double-major programs: Mariam Elzeiny from Egypt, taking Cognitive Science and Political Science; Zhuldyz Alimbek from Kazakhstan, in Cognitive Science and Information Technology; Nachiket Jain from India, for Financial and Business Economics; and Laiba Rizwan from Pakistan, in English and Professional Writing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_235692\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235692\" class=\"size-full wp-image-235692\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2016\/10\/globalscholars.jpg\" alt=\"Front row: From left, York students Laiba Rizwan, Mariam Elzeiny, Zhuldyz Alimbek and Nachiket Jain. They also applied strategic sophistication and presented a compelling rationale in choosing their double major.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The YWS application is competitive, assessing academic success and students\u2019 motivations and goals for studying their specified majors. \u201cThe application process was intended to be an invitation to ignite their imagination, and we were fascinated by the responses we received,\u201d says Mukherjee-Reed. \u201cWe would like to build up to a core of 30 World Scholars by 2020 who would choose double major combinations in the humanities, languages, social sciences and professional programs. We encourage all our students to explore combinations of subject areas which can help them distinguish themselves from their peers. As I like to say to our students, \u2018we accept no boundaries in the world of knowledge. Neither should you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Scholars attend a retreat at the end of their\u00a0second year to reflect on completing the first half of their degrees and to gain advice and insights for success in the second half. \u00a0As part of the Dean\u2019s Circle of Scholars, the World Scholars will be mentored continuously to seek out research or experiential learning opportunities available at York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year was a soft launch of the program and we were delighted with the response we received. I am very grateful to Carol Altilia, and her Registrarial team and my own administrative team for launching it so quickly,\u201d says Mukherjee-Reed \u201cFor the next academic year, we are planning a bigger rollout and expecting an even greater response from international students of exceptional merit.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The program recruited four outstanding students who chose specific double-major programs.
