{"id":236719,"date":"2016-11-28T15:34:18","date_gmt":"2016-11-28T20:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=236719"},"modified":"2025-04-02T10:41:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T14:41:10","slug":"york-u-marks-international-day-of-persons-with-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2016\/11\/28\/york-u-marks-international-day-of-persons-with-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"York U marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>York University will join the international community to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (Dec. 3) on Dec. 1 on campus.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the celebration, the Centre for Human Rights will be hosting the following workshop:<\/p>\n<p>Anti-racist and Anticolonial Approaches to Mental Health Strategies<br \/>\n<strong>Date:<\/strong>\u00a0Dec. 1<br \/>\n<strong>Time<\/strong>: 1\u00a0to 2:30pm<br \/>\n<strong>Location:<\/strong>\u00a0280A York Lanes<br \/>\n<strong>Speaker:<\/strong>\u00a0Dr. Rachel Gorman<\/p>\n<p>Based in a recognition of Indigenous approaches to wellness, and anti-racist critiques of the social determinants of mental health, this workshop will provide an opportunity for York administration, management and service providers to discuss and evaluate concrete tools for supporting mental health, as well as outlining a broader strategy for well-being and social change.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to register, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/rights.info.yorku.ca\/training\/the-workshop-series-living-in-the-intersections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rights.info.yorku.ca\/training\/the-workshop-series-living-in-the-intersections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Human Rights supports York University\u2019s commitment to enhancing inclusive and accessible campuses. York University offers numerous resources to promote the inclusion and full participation of people with disabilities. Some of the services include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mental Health &amp; Wellness at York \u2013 This year, York launched its Mental Health &amp; Wellness Strategy initiative that aims to promote a healthy, inclusive and supportive environment that fosters mental health and well-being among members of the York community. More info: <a href=\"http:\/\/mhw.info.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mhw.info.yorku.ca<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Counselling &amp; Disability Services (CDS) \u2013 Provides a range of essential psychological services to the York University community. The primary aim of CDS is to help students realize, develop and fulfill their personal potential to maximally benefit from their university experience.<\/li>\n<li>VAN GO Service \u2013 Offered by Transportation Services, VAN GO is a mobility service initiative, designed to assist students and staff with disabilities to get around campus. The service is operational from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Friday.<\/li>\n<li>The Peer Teams \u2013 Managed by the Student Community &amp; Leadership Development Office, the Health Education &amp; Promotion Peer Team is a group of student health educators who plan programs on and around campus focusing on health topics such as mental health and stress, alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, cigarette smoking, active living and nutrition.<\/li>\n<li>Access Centre York \u2013 A York Federation Community Service Group, the Access Centre strives to identify and take action around issues of concern for students with mental, learning and physical disabilities by providing advocacy, services, social networks, resources and a safe space.<\/li>\n<li>Centre for Human Rights \u2013 Provides case resolution, education and resources on matters related to accessibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The services mentioned above are only a snapshot of some of the services offered by York University that advance equity on our campuses through education and the provision of accessible services.
