In the case of York University students enrolled in Portuguese 2000 (Intermediate Portuguese), this past year provided the opportunity to learn about the Portuguese nation of East Timor and respond to the difficulty for many children there to access education and literacy.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to reach out to these children, students in the class wrote books of short stories that will be delivered to newly created libraries in Timor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_251947\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-251947\" class=\"size-full wp-image-251947\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/04\/protuguese-studies-students.jpg\" alt=\"portuguese studies students\" width=\"960\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/04\/protuguese-studies-students.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/04\/protuguese-studies-students-400x144.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-251947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students in Portuguese 2000 wrote short stories for children in Timor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A launch event for the books took place on April 3, and students delivered presentations on their work before a jury that included\u00a0Professor Maria Jo\u00e3o Dodman (Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian Studies); Ana Paula Ribeiro, coordinator of Portuguese Teaching in Canada, Cam\u00f5es, Instituto da Coopera\u00e7\u00e3o e da L\u00edngua (Cam\u00f5es I. P.), the co-sponsor of this initiative; scholar and writer Irene Marques; and journalist, writer and curator of the Gallery of Portuguese Pioneers, Humberta Ara\u00fajo.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_251938\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-251938\" class=\" wp-image-251938\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/04\/books-portuguese-studies-students-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"books portuguese studies students\" width=\"276\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/04\/books-portuguese-studies-students-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/04\/books-portuguese-studies-students-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/04\/books-portuguese-studies-students-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/04\/books-portuguese-studies-students.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-251938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The books created by students in Portuguese Studies<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Students spoke of their creative process, their goals and their selection of themes and illustrations. Jury members had an opportunity to ask questions, to offer recommendations and to speak of the value of the stories, and noted the universal qualities of love, freedom and equality expressed in the writing. All discussions were conducted in Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>Professor In\u00eas Cardoso, visiting scholar under an international protocol with Cam\u00f5es I. P. (Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian Studies, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies), developed and guided the students over some months.<\/p>\n<p>Students wrote in groups and used the <a href=\"https:\/\/storybird.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Storybird<\/a> platform. The site offered a variety of illustrations; however, one group decided to illustrate their work themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The project comprised many steps. First, students read sources that informed them about Timorese culture and traditions, as a way of writing texts better adjusted to the target audience, and then they submitted initial ideas. After formative feedback was provided, students proposed a first complete draft of the story, which was then revised by the instructor, as well as writer Rosa Maria Oliveira and assistant coordinator of the \u201cFormar Mais\u201d Project in Timor, Ana Lu\u00edsa Oliveira.<\/p>\n<p>East Timor is a developing young nation where there have been diagnosed needs regarding the promotion of reading in Portuguese. A partnership with the project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instituto-camoes.pt\/en\/activity-camoes\/what-we-do\/co-operation\/programmes-and-projects\/featured-projects\/15976-formar-mais-continuing-education-for-teachers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\"Formar Mais \u2013 Continuing Education for Teachers\"<\/a>\u00a0(Cam\u00f5es, I. P.) allowed the class to engage in deeper considerations about the realities of Timor, and also to guarantee that these books will be delivered to children and their newly created libraries.<\/p>\n<p>This project is in line with the students' learning goals, and they benefitted from a reading-writing interaction that promoted both reading and a more informed writing production with greater esthetic value.<\/p>\n<p>The great values of the works presented have been recognized by children literature scholar Ana Margarida Ramos from the University of Aveiro (Portugal). Along with the literary quality of the texts produced and their visible connection with Timorese context, she highlighted the commitment of these \u201cforeign\u201d and \u201cheritage learners\u201d (Portuguese, Brazilian and Angolan background) who managed to progress in the Portuguese language to accomplish, above all, a solidarity purpose.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter she wrote to students, she noted that \"language and literature reduce distances, remove boundaries and tighten the links between people\" and that \"stories continue to be important vehicles of communication and
