The first Community Conversation of 2018, titled \u201cBlack Panther,\u00a0<\/em>Celebrating Blackness in the African Diaspora,\" celebrated and analyzed black culture around the world by focusing on the $1.2-billion-grossing superhero film.<\/p>\n

Black Panther<\/em> is based on the Marvel superhero character from the fictional African nation of Wakanda, but incorporates a mosaic of real cultural elements from the continent.<\/p>\n

Community Conversations is an initiative of the office of Global and Community Engagement (GCE) in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University.<\/p>\n

In the film, <\/em>the old king\u2019s son, T\u2019Challa (Chadwick Boseman), ascends to the throne, inherits the superhero mantle of the Black Panther from his father and reigns over his protectionist nation that has hidden its technological advancement from the outside world. But the sins of the father haunt the son when T\u2019Challa\u2019s cousin, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who had been abandoned in America as a child by the old king, comes to Wakanda to challenge T\u2019Challa\u2019s claim to the throne.<\/p>\n

Sylvia Bawa<\/p><\/div>\n

Moderated by sociology Professor Sylvia Bawa and held in February at the Fort York Library, this conversation invited community members to discuss the impact and significance of the movie to Africans, diasporan African communities and black communities around the world. The event, which was organized by Rowena Linton, drew participants from various sectors of the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than just a review of the film, the conversation was a very rich, honest and genuine discussion,\u201d said Linton. \u201cThe energy and spirit in the room were laudable, and I was truly happy to be a part of this riveting conversation ushered by Professor Bawa.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conversation centred on issues of identity constructions and representations in the media. Participants discussed, among other things, how the movie impacts black communities differently depending on their geospatial and socioeconomic locations and contexts.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a catalyst, Black Panther<\/em> has built on years of work by activists and community members to boost and increase our cultural capital in North America, and this is worth celebrating,\u201d said Bawa. \u201cIt is another step towards stemming the tide of systemic discrimination and racism.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conversation also provided an opportunity for community members to discuss how the tension between T\u2019Challa and Erik are a representation of the tensions between black peoples from Africa and the African diaspora.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis tension is linked to the tactic of colonialism to \u2018divide and conquer,\u2019 \u201d said Linton, \u201cso the multiplicity among black people that exists is not celebrated but indeed used to further separate us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another key theme from the conversation was Afrofuturism \u2013 futuristic or science fiction themes incorporated into black history and culture \u2013 and the elements of African culture present in the film, from clothing and customs to the Wakandan accent. The Wakandan language, isiXhosa<\/a>, is real and is one of South Africa\u2019s 11 official languages.<\/p>\n

Mary Goitom<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cSeveral themes stood out for me in my reflection of the film Black Panther<\/em>. A major category that encompassed several factors was the representation of power and the power of representation,\u201d said social work Professor Mary Goitom, who attended the conversation and commented on this film as the first superhero movie from Hollywood and in North America to feature a predominantly black cast.<\/p>\n

The conversation also touched upon the consumption and commodification of black lives and black stories, the black body, spirituality in Africa and the diaspora\u2019s connection to the black church, community building and networking, supporting black-owned businesses, the value of money and bartering, and the rise of capitalism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe capital take-home message from this Community Conversation is the importance of generating more opportunities for these kinds of discussions \u2013 and in this particular case, to follow up and explore in more detail the richness of the content of this group\u2019s conversation,\u201d said Goitom.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe take-home message for me, as a moderator to this very engaging discussion, is that Black Panther<\/em> provides an opportunity for deeper conversations about colonialism, slavery and global citizenship, interdependence and connections,\u201d said Bawa. \u201cIt was refreshing to engage diverse and critical perspectives from participants in this conversation on issues beyond Black Panther<\/em>. All participants agreed that a followup to the conversation was necessary to encourage dialogue and start conversations that will forge stronger community links and help ease some of the tensions among different categories of African diasporan groups in the city and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n
