The two-day event, which took place May 15 and 16 at York University\u2019s Keele Campus and is now in its seventh year, was organized by the team at Teaching Commons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe chose this year\u2019s theme of \u2018Intentionality in Your Teaching: From Practice to Praxis\u2019 to open up conversations about different ways of knowing and doing unfamiliar to us,\u201d Maheux-Pelletier said.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that the theme provided everyone an opportunity to mindfully reflect on his or her own teaching practice and should allow attendees to \u201copen their minds and hearts to new perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_264812\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-264812\" class=\"size-full wp-image-264812\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2019\/05\/Tif-participant-Andrew-Skelton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"350\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-264812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TiF participant Andrew Skelton, assistant professor, Teaching Stream, Department of Mathematics<\/p><\/div>\n<p>TiF\u2019s program featured the keynote address, two plenary sessions, a panel featuring the winners of the President\u2019s University-wide Teaching Awards, a poster session and seven blocks of concurrent talks.<\/p>\n<p>The concurrent sessions addressed a variety of useful topics, including using engaging instructional methods in the classroom; ways to support researchers focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning; employing peer leaders to enhance student learning; and becoming a great undergraduate student supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>Conference attendees also had the opportunity to enhance their technological skills at TiF MakerSpace, a production suite that featured a mobile video recording system, screen recording and video editing software and a free, open-source audio recording and editing platform. All of these tools can contribute to the ability to offer blended or online courses or to enhance the classroom experience. These tools, along with expert advice, are made available through the Teaching Commons to faculty interested in exploring and creating digital learning experiences as part of their teaching.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_264820\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-264820\" class=\"size-full wp-image-264820\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2019\/05\/Will-Gage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-264820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Will Gage<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Faculty of Health Professor Will Gage, the associate vice-president of teaching and learning, welcomed the attendees, noting, \u201cThere is tremendous work in teaching and learning happening across the university and it\u2019s a pleasure to have great people come out and share their work with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, it was Kam\u2019s turn to offer his perspective on keeping students in large classes engaged. His presentation was filled with tips that he has learned from years of teaching economics classes ranging in size from 500 to 1,100 students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no one way to teach right,\u201d Kam said, \u201cand it\u2019s also a myth that you can\u2019t do active learning in a large lecture hall. No one wants to hear anyone lecture for three straight hours; you need to break up the monotony. You can brainstorm, you can solve problems, you can work with case studies and you can have discussion periods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before diving into the course material, however, Kam suggested that faculty turn their attention to logistics and classroom management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople generally say the last lecture of the semester is the most important, but I believe it\u2019s the first,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have 10 minutes to capture the students; it\u2019s when they decide if you\u2019re worth listening to. Put your best teaching into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During that first class, a skilled teacher will also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the tone for class interactions;<\/li>\n<li>Set clear expectations of what is expected from students;<\/li>\n<li>Let them know what they can expect from the professor; and<\/li>\n<li>Establish course ground rules and follow through consistently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_264813\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-264813\" class=\"size-full wp-image-264813\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2019\/05\/TiF-participant-Professor-of-Nursing-Iris-Epstein.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-264813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TiF conference participant Iris Epstein, professor of nursing in the Faculty of Health<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He recommended that the discussion on \u2018Day One\u2019 should include acceptable class behaviour, rules, phone norms and lateness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnect the students\u2019 classroom behaviour to professional behaviour,\u201d Kam said. \u201cYou\u2019re teaching them to go out into the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He advised that breaks during lengthy classes are crucial, because \u201cyou get 15 to 20 minutes of attention and then they\u2019re gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kam also warned against altering the rules you\u2019ve set down \u2013 \u201cBe consistent so they know what to expect,\u201d or negotiating grades, because \u201cif you want to start a fight in the lecture hall, treat two students differently from each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to his instructional strategy, Kam is a fan of talking while in motion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out from behind the podium,\u201d he suggested as he walked the floor. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing worse than a professor standing there for 180 minutes. Kam is also a fan of breaking up the lecture with interactive opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Kam\u2019s speech was jam-packed with information that anyone teaching a course might find helpful, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deliver challenging topics in multiple formats to increase the students\u2019 opportunities to understand: videos, demonstrations, etc.;<\/li>\n<li>Get feedback from students;<\/li>\n<li>Establish rules for discourse so the lecture hall is a safe space; and<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t marginalize students; it never works out well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_264815\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-264815\" class=\"size-full wp-image-264815\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2019\/05\/TiF-concurrent-session-participants.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2019\/05\/TiF-concurrent-session-participants.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2019\/05\/TiF-concurrent-session-participants-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-264815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TiF concurrent session faculty and teaching assistants pose for a conference cameo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During a Q-and-A at the close of his lecture, Kam was asked how faculty could know if they had succeeded, beyond passing and graduation rates. He ended by quoting one of York University\u2019s renowned economics professors, Avi Cohen, who once told Kam that if he influenced one student in his class, he was doing his job.<\/p>\n<p>Judging by the breadth of Kam\u2019s knowledge of teaching mechanics and strategy, he certainly influenced the TiF audience, and, as organizer Maheux-Pelletier suggested, will allow them to reflect on potential changes to their classroom strategies.<\/p>\n<p>York University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingcommons.yorku.ca\/conferences\/york-conferences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching in Focus (TiF) conference<\/a> is an annual peer-led, professional development conference that is offered completely free of charge.
