{"id":281241,"date":"2020-10-22T15:34:17","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T19:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=281241"},"modified":"2025-04-02T11:41:43","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T15:41:43","slug":"professor-offers-engaging-first-year-environmental-science-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2020\/10\/22\/professor-offers-engaging-first-year-environmental-science-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor offers engaging first-year environmental science course"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <strong>Gail Fraser<\/strong> received one of York University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/avptl\/academic-innovation-fund\/\">Academic Innovation Fund<\/a> grants six years ago to change her Introduction to Environmental Science course from an in-person format to a blended style, little did she know that eventually, she would be delivering the entire course remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the pandemic, Fraser \u2013 a professor and undergraduate program director in York\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2020\/02\/17\/new-faculty-of-environmental-and-urban-change-created-to-address-worlds-most-pressing-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and colleagues University-wide have turned their talents to remote teaching, and she is especially concerned about her first-year students.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_247159\" style=\"width: 353px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-247159\" class=\"size-full wp-image-247159\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/10\/ScoopGailFraser.jpg\" alt=\"Gail Fraser\" width=\"343\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2017\/10\/ScoopGailFraser.jpg 343w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2017\/10\/ScoopGailFraser-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-247159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gail Fraser<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI am concerned about the students enjoying themselves, getting good quality information and finding the course engaging,\u201d said Fraser.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure she had all the tools she needed to make that possible, Fraser enrolled in Creative Course Content, a course offered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingcommons.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teaching Commons<\/a>, where the instructor employed a variety of techniques, such as discussion forums, that could be used in remote classes to keep students interested and engaged. Then, Fraser made substantive changes to her syllabus to meet the new needs of the online version of the course.<\/p>\n<p>First came the decision to deliver the course asynchronously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a teacher, I love the interaction with students, but I know that they are all over the world, in different time zones, and synchronous lectures and tutorials could be problematic for them,\u201d she said of the year-long course. \u201cI also decided to do away with exams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fraser records her weekly lectures, which are delivered in chunks so that students can watch pieces at various times or sit through an entire lecture at once. There is a weekly quiz that takes the place of the exams, so the questions aren\u2019t as simple as a typical pop quiz might be. In addition, there are weekly tutorials run by teaching assistants (TAs) and are held live on Zoom for groups of 20 students.<\/p>\n<p>During each tutorial, the students have the opportunity to work on the course\u2019s assigned weekly activity, which is related to the week\u2019s lecture content. They are broken into groups to work on the activity collectively, before returning to the full tutorial where they have a discussion about the activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are benefits to attending these live sessions, because you can get your weekly deliverable sorted out while earning participation marks,\u201d Fraser said. \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity, too, to get to know your classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_257766\" style=\"width: 536px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-257766\" class=\"size-full wp-image-257766\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/10\/GailFraser.jpg\" alt=\"Gail Fraser holding a Leach\u2019s Storm Petrel \u2013 the bird on which her research was focused. Thomas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For those students who are unable to attend the live tutorial, they can watch a recording and read relevant material, but they must do an additional activity if they want to earn participation marks.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, students are all required to complete standalone assignments using <a href=\"https:\/\/simbio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SimBio<\/a>, interactive, inquiry-driven online modules that encourage critical thinking, as well as subject knowledge. The weekly deadlines for assignments help keep first-year students on track \u2013 nothing can be submitted late.<\/p>\n<p>To give herself an opportunity to know the students better, Fraser holds a drop-in session on Zoom each week where students can ask questions about the course material or simply chat with Fraser. They can also schedule a one-on-one appointment with her or with a TA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask if they have questions about the lecture, but I have also ended up talking more about my research than ever before,\u201d she said. \u201cIf they\u2019re too shy to talk, they can always type their questions in the chat function, and if they don\u2019t have questions, I show them things, like the decomposition project I\u2019ve started in my backyard, or I tell them about how I got started in my career. Down the road, through the course, I\u2019ll also offer opportunities to talk about what it\u2019s like to do science for a living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fraser says she has the sense that the course is working for the students, but plans to survey them after Reading Week, once they\u2019ve had time to get into the rhythm of the course and accustomed to the remote format.
