For <strong>Charles-Antoine Rouyer<\/strong>, who teaches Communication, Health &amp; Environment to 125 students this fall in a remote format, cancelling the course's field trips was not an option.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_282568\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2020\/12\/CharlesAntoine-Rouyer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-282568\" class=\" wp-image-282568\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2020\/12\/CharlesAntoine-Rouyer.jpg\" alt=\"Charles-Antoine Rouyer\" width=\"278\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2020\/12\/CharlesAntoine-Rouyer.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2020\/12\/CharlesAntoine-Rouyer-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-282568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles-Antoine Rouyer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\"We usually do two field trips in the fall in this course, as experiential education is a great addition to achieve some of the learning objectives,\" said Rouyer, who has been teaching the fall\/winter six-credit course since 2004. \"It's also an opportunity to see and experience what we talk about in the class.\"<\/p>\n<p>The field trips, focused on watershed dynamics and urban ecology education, allow students to see science in action and engage with what they are learning, he said.<\/p>\n<p>When the course shifted to a remote format in September, Rouyer considered what alternatives might provide a similar experience to his students. His idea? To do the field trips anyway, and livestream it to his students. But first, he'd have to test it out.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn't as easy as expected; in fact, Rouyer admits it was \"quite a bit of work\" to figure out what technology would work best to deliver the experience. He spent a few hours of experimenting, first at home and then on site, and decided to stream via his smart phone with a 1080p camera and feed the video into Zoom. He used his earbuds' microphone to transmit audio.<\/p>\n<p>The first livestream event took place on Oct. 3 at the City of Toronto Brickworks Park to showcase manufactured nature with ponds to understand how wetlands construction provides natural water filtration and flood protection.<\/p>\n<p>Rouyer surveyed the class to measure interest in participating on site \u2013 while ensuring COVID-19 protocols for distancing and social gatherings would be followed \u2013 and one student attended in person. Of the other 124 students, 76 logged on to participate.<\/p>\n<p>\"It was nice to have one student present for added interactivity and his questions and input benefitted the whole class watching online,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>During the livestream Rouyer ensured students could ask questions and interact in real-time via Zoom. The event was also recorded to allow for viewing by students unable to attend online.<\/p>\n<p>After reviewing the recording, he sought to improve the livestream quality for the next field trip, scheduled for Oct. 24. This time, he would broadcast live from the Glendon Forest along the Don River, to educate students on watersheds and ecological restoration.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_282567\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2020\/12\/20201024_105945-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-282567\" class=\" wp-image-282567\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2020\/12\/20201024_105945-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of the GoPro set up Charles-Antoine Rouyer used in his second livestreamed field trip\" width=\"346\" height=\"732\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-282567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A photo of the GoPro setup Charles-Antoine Rouyer used in his second livestreamed field trip (Image: John Marbella)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For this event, Rouyer upgraded to a GoPro camera and connected it to the internet through his phone's hotspot to provide a livestream. However, due to bandwidth limitations, the phone could not support both the GoPro livestream and Zoom session. To improve the experience, he asked a student participating online to host the Zoom session, and launched the livestream through a GoPro URL. One of the four students attending this field trip in person stayed on Zoom through her cell phone, and relayed information between the class and Rouyer.<\/p>\n<p>Although there were some glitches in both methods \u2013 such as some interruptions to video and audio consistency \u2013 Rouyer feels both experiments were successful. And, according to a survey distributed to his class, so do his students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asma Zahra<\/strong>, a student who attended the Glendon Forest field trip in person, said she appreciated the time Rouyer took to be creative with experiential learning. Acting as Rouyer's \"ears\" for the Zoom session while he was livestreaming on GoPro added depth to the content she had learned in class. She also commended him for being creative and innovative in his delivery of experiential learning.<\/p>\n<p>\"He is very passionate about the environment and it shows through his lectures and presentations,\" she said. \"Professors who take the time to be creative, engage their students and try to get the most out of experiential learning are much appreciated through this time.\"<\/p>\n<p>She notes that since taking classes in the summer semester, when learning went remote, she's enjoyed this class the most.<\/p>\n<p>\"This is by far the best class I have taken through the online format since the pandemic,\" she said. \"It is very important to not only 'adjust' to our current situation, but to be more creative and innovative with delivery of education. Professor Rouyer ... went out of his way to engage students and implement the experiential learning. Though there will always be issues with technology, he still fought through it to make sure students get the most out of this course through these times. I think that's commendable.\"<\/p>\n<p>Rouyer said he tried to offer students a variety of options to experience the sites, including instructions for a self-guided tour, and site maps provided via eClass, so students could follow along during the livestream events. He surveyed all students who participated in one or both sessions and found that most students preferred the technology used in the second field trip. The feedback overall has been very positive, however.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aameet Ekram<\/strong>, a first-year student studying political science from abroad, said the livestream field trip idea was \"interesting,\" and although he had reservations, the experience was better than expected.<\/p>\n<p>\"It was a format I could learn off of, and I genuinely did,\" said Ekram. \"I\u2019d advocate for this type of programming being implemented into different programs. I\u2019m sure it would be real useful for courses which would\u2019ve had field trips in non-COVID conditions.\"<\/p>\n<p>Despite studying from overseas in a different time zone, Ekram was able to log on and participate, and gain valuable insights from the experience. \"It showed a preview of the environments themselves \u2013 which is, really, the aim of the course \u2013 and allowed me to see the place in a way I would\u2019ve never gotten to any other way (learning in an online environment).\"<\/p>\n<p>Though Ekram says it isn't comparable to in-person field trips, it's the next best thing. \"I'd call the entire idea genius,\" he said. \"If anything, the <span class=\"markonvvue7ii\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">live<\/span>streamed field trips actually made me want to go to these places in real life. I think I\u2019ll do that once the entire situation is normalized and I can actually come to Toronto.\"<\/p>\n<p>Rouyer has presented his livestream field trip experimentations with faculty members who meet weekly to share e-learning strategies, and hopes his experiences will contribute to a University-wide community of practice about remote on-site livestreaming.<\/p>\n<p>York faculty member <strong>Linda Carozza<\/strong>, a course instructor in the Department of Philosophy and an e-learning peer mentor in the Teaching Commons, leads the faculty group that shares experiences in e-learning. L\u2019\u00e9ducation exp\u00e9rientielle est un excellent moyen d\u2019atteindre certains objectifs d\u2019apprentissage, dit Charles-Antoine Rouyer, qui assure ce cours de six cr\u00e9dits depuis 2004. C\u2019est aussi une bonne occasion de d\u00e9couvrir ce dont nous avons parl\u00e9 en classe. Les sorties sur le terrain, ax\u00e9es sur la dynamique du bassin hydrographique et l\u2019\u00e9cologie urbaine, permettent aux \u00e9tudiants de voir la science \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre et de s\u2019investir dans leur apprentissage.\u2009\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Quand son cours est pass\u00e9 \u00e0 un format \u00e0 distance en septembre dernier, Charles-Antoine Rouyer s\u2019est demand\u00e9 quelles options pouvaient offrir une exp\u00e9rience similaire aux sorties sur le terrain \u00e0 ses \u00e9tudiants. Sa solution? Les faire quand m\u00eame, mais les diffuser en direct. Tout d\u2019abord, il devait faire des essais.<\/p>\n<p>Charles-Antoine admet que ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas aussi facile que pr\u00e9vu et que cela lui a demand\u00e9 \u00ab\u2009pas mal d\u2019efforts\u2009\u00bb pour trouver la technologie la mieux adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019exp\u00e9rience. Il a consacr\u00e9 quelques heures \u00e0 faire des essais, d\u2019abord chez lui, puis sur le terrain, avant de d\u00e9cider d\u2019opter pour une diffusion en continu avec \u00e0 la cam\u00e9ra\u00a01080p de son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone intelligent. Pour l\u2019audio, il a utilis\u00e9 le micro de ses \u00e9couteurs-boutons et Zoom pour la diffusion en continu et en direct.<\/p>\n<p>Le premier \u00e9v\u00e9nement a \u00e9t\u00e9 diffus\u00e9 en direct le 3\u00a0octobre\u00a02020 au parc Brickworks de la ville de Toronto. Cette sortie sur le terrain visait \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter un environnement artificiel avec des \u00e9tangs et comprendre comment la construction de zones humides permet la filtration naturelle de l\u2019eau et prot\u00e8ge contre les inondations.<\/p>\n<p>Charles-Antoine Rouyer a sond\u00e9 sa classe pour mesurer l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat d\u2019une participation en personne, tout en respectant les protocoles de la\u00a0COVID-19 pour la distanciation et les rencontres sociales. Un seul \u00e9tudiant s\u2019est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 la sortie et 76 y ont particip\u00e9 au moyen de Zoom.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u2009C\u2019\u00e9tait bien d\u2019avoir un \u00e9tudiant pr\u00e9sent, pr\u00e9cise-t-il. Cela ajoutait un c\u00f4t\u00e9 interactif \u00e0 la sortie; ses questions et ses commentaires ont profit\u00e9 \u00e0 ceux qui \u00e9taient en ligne.\u2009\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Durant la diffusion en direct, Charles-Antoine s\u2019est assur\u00e9 de donner la chance aux participants de poser des questions et d\u2019interagir en temps r\u00e9el gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Zoom. L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9 pour ceux qui ne pouvaient pas y assister en direct.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s avoir visionn\u00e9 l\u2019enregistrement, Charles-Antoine a peaufin\u00e9 la qualit\u00e9 de la diffusion en continu avant la deuxi\u00e8me sortie sur le terrain qui \u00e9tait pr\u00e9vue le 24\u00a0octobre dans la for\u00eat de Glendon, le long de la rivi\u00e8re Don. L\u2019objectif p\u00e9dagogique \u00e9tait de sensibiliser les \u00e9l\u00e8ves aux bassins hydrographiques et \u00e0 la restauration \u00e9cologique.<\/p>\n<p>Pour cette sortie, Charles-Antoine s\u2019est \u00e9quip\u00e9 d\u2019une cam\u00e9ra GoPro et l\u2019a connect\u00e9e \u00e0 Internet en utilisant le point d\u2019acc\u00e8s de son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone pour la diffusion en continu. Malheureusement, en raison des limites de bande passante, son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone ne pouvait pas appuyer \u00e0 la fois la diffusion en continu de la cam\u00e9ra GoPro et la session Zoom. L\u2019enseignant a donc confi\u00e9 \u00e0 un \u00e9tudiant en ligne la gestion de la session Zoom et a lanc\u00e9 la diffusion en continu avec une adresse URL GoPro. Cette fois, quatre \u00e9tudiants s\u2019\u00e9taient pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s. Parmi eux, une \u00e9tudiante est rest\u00e9e sur Zoom avec son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone pendant toute la sortie et a assur\u00e9 la liaison entre la classe et l\u2019enseignant.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 quelques probl\u00e8mes techniques avec les deux m\u00e9thodes \u2014 notamment des interruptions du flux de l\u2019audio et de la vid\u00e9o \u2014, Charles-Antoine consid\u00e8re que les deux approches \u00e9taient fructueuses. Selon les r\u00e9sultats d\u2019un sondage distribu\u00e9 par la suite, tous les \u00e9tudiants de la classe \u00e9taient du m\u00eame avis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asma Zahra<\/strong>, l\u2019\u00e9tudiante qui \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sente lors de la sortie dans la for\u00eat de Glendon, se dit reconnaissante du temps investi dans cette exp\u00e9rience d\u2019\u00e9ducation exp\u00e9rientielle. Le fait d\u2019avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 les \u00ab\u2009oreilles\u2009\u00bb de la rencontre Zoom \u2014 pendant que l\u2019enseignant \u00e9tait en direct sur GoPro \u2014 a ajout\u00e9 de la substance au contenu de ses cours th\u00e9oriques. Elle loue \u00e9galement la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 et le sens de l\u2019innovation d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s dans cette possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9ducation exp\u00e9rientielle.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u2009M.\u00a0Rouyer se passionne pour l\u2019environnement et on ressent cela dans ses cours et ses pr\u00e9sentations, d\u00e9clare-t-elle. En ce moment, les professeurs qui font des efforts pour \u00eatre cr\u00e9atifs, faire participer leurs \u00e9tudiants et tirer le meilleur parti possible de l\u2019\u00e9ducation exp\u00e9rientielle sont tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9s.\u2009\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Ce cours est d\u2019ailleurs son pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 depuis le passage \u00e0 l\u2019apprentissage \u00e0 distance durant le trimestre d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9. \u00ab\u2009C\u2019est de loin le meilleur cours que j\u2019ai suivi en ligne depuis le d\u00e9but de la pand\u00e9mie, ajoute-t-elle. Il est tr\u00e8s important non seulement de s\u2019adapter \u00e0 la situation actuelle, mais aussi d\u2019adopter des approches p\u00e9dagogiques plus cr\u00e9atives et innovantes. M.\u00a0Rouyer s\u2019est donn\u00e9 beaucoup de mal pour maintenir l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat chez ses \u00e9tudiants et leur offrir des possibilit\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9ducation exp\u00e9rientielle. Malgr\u00e9 quelques probl\u00e8mes techniques in\u00e9vitables, il a fait tout son possible pour que les \u00e9tudiants et \u00e9tudiantes tirent le meilleur parti de ce cours durant cette p\u00e9riode. Les r\u00e9sultats d\u2019un sondage aupr\u00e8s des \u00e9tudiants ayant particip\u00e9 aux deux sorties ont indiqu\u00e9 que la majorit\u00e9 d\u2019entre eux pr\u00e9f\u00e9rait la technologie utilis\u00e9e lors de la deuxi\u00e8me sortie sur le terrain. Dans l\u2019ensemble, la r\u00e9troaction a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s positive.<\/p>\n<p>Selon <strong>Aameet Ekram<\/strong>, un \u00e9tudiant de premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e qui suit des cours de science politique \u00e0 distance, la sortie sur le terrain diffus\u00e9e en continu et en direct \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s \u00ab\u2009int\u00e9ressante\u2009\u00bb, et malgr\u00e9 ses r\u00e9serves initiales, l\u2019exp\u00e9rience s\u2019est beaucoup mieux pass\u00e9e que pr\u00e9vu. \u00ab\u2009Ce format permettait d\u2019apprendre, et franchement, j\u2019ai beaucoup appris, d\u00e9clare-t-il. Je pr\u00e9coniserais de mettre en place ce type d\u2019exp\u00e9rience dans d\u2019autres programmes. Je suis s\u00fbr que ce serait vraiment utile dans des cours qui auraient offert des sorties sur le terrain si la pand\u00e9mie n\u2019avait pas frapp\u00e9.\u2009\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Bien qu\u2019il \u00e9tudie \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger avec plusieurs heures de d\u00e9calage horaire, Ekram a pu se connecter, participer et tirer des enseignements pr\u00e9cieux de cette exp\u00e9rience. \u00ab\u2009Cela m\u2019a permis de d\u00e9couvrir r\u00e9ellement les environnements en question \u2014 ce qui est l\u2019objectif du cours \u2014 et d\u2019explorer des lieux que je n\u2019aurais jamais eu l\u2019occasion de visiter (dans le cadre d\u2019un apprentissage en ligne). \u00c0 d\u00e9faut de visites en personne sur le terrain, c\u2019est ce qu\u2019il y a de mieux. C\u2019est vraiment une id\u00e9e de g\u00e9nie, ajoute-t-il. En fait, la diffusion des sorties sur le terrain m\u2019a donn\u00e9 envie de visiter ces endroits. Je pense que je le ferai quand tout sera revenu \u00e0 la normale et que je pourrai venir \u00e0 Toronto.\u2009\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Charles-Antoine Rouyer a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ses exp\u00e9riences de diffusion en continu et en direct aux membres du corps enseignant qui se r\u00e9unissent chaque semaine pour partager des strat\u00e9gies d\u2019apprentissage en ligne. Il esp\u00e8re que ses exp\u00e9riences contribueront \u00e0 une communaut\u00e9 de pratique \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle de l\u2019universit\u00e9 sur la diffusion en direct \u00e0 distance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Linda Carozza,<\/strong> membre du corps professoral de York, charg\u00e9e de cours du D\u00e9partement de philosophie et mentore partenaire de l\u2019apprentissage en ligne au sein de Teaching Commons, dirige le groupe de professeurs qui partagent leurs exp\u00e9riences sur l\u2019apprentissage en ligne.
