{"id":283146,"date":"2021-01-10T19:51:16","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T00:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=283146"},"modified":"2025-04-03T11:12:46","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T15:12:46","slug":"new-study-shows-what-happens-when-your-brain-cant-tell-which-way-is-up-or-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2021\/01\/10\/new-study-shows-what-happens-when-your-brain-cant-tell-which-way-is-up-or-down\/","title":{"rendered":"New study shows what happens when your brain can't tell which way is up or down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">What feels like up may\u00a0actually be\u00a0some other direction depending on how our brains process our orientation, according to psychology researchers at York University\u2019s Faculty of Health.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In a new study<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0243381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">published in <em>PLoS One<\/em><\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">, researchers at York University\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Centre for Vision Research<span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">found that an individual\u2019s\u00a0interpretation\u00a0of the direction of gravity can be altered by how their brain responds to visual information. <strong>Laurence Harris<\/strong>, a professor in the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Health, and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong>Meaghan McManus<\/strong><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">, a graduate student in his lab, found, using virtual reality, that people differ in how much they are influenced by their visual environment.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Harris and McManus say that this difference can help us better understand how individuals use visual information to interpret their environment and how they respond when performing other tasks.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\">\u201cThese findings may also help us to better understand and predict why astronauts may misestimate how far they have moved in a given situation, especially in the microgravity of space,\u201d says Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In this virtual reality-based study, McManus and Harris had their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>participants lie down in a virtual environment that was tilted so that the visual \u201cup\u201d was above their head and not aligned with gravity. They found that the participants could be divided into two groups: one group who perceived they were standing up vertically (aligned with the visual scene) even though they were actually lying down, and a second group who maintained a more realistic idea of their lying position.<span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_283159\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2021\/01\/virtual-reality-vision-study.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-283159\" class=\"wp-image-283159 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2021\/01\/virtual-reality-vision-study.jpg\" alt=\"virtual reality vision study\" width=\"880\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2021\/01\/virtual-reality-vision-study.jpg 880w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2021\/01\/virtual-reality-vision-study-400x171.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-283159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this virtual reality-based study, participants were to lie down in a virtual environment that was tilted so that the visual \u201cup\u201d was above their head and not aligned with gravity<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\">The researchers called the first group, \u201cVisual Reorientation Illusion vulnerable\u201d (VRI-vulnerable).<span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The two groups of participants, while in the same physical orientation and seeing the same scene, experienced simulated self-motion through the environment differently. Those that were VRI-vulnerable reported feeling that they were moving faster and further than those that were not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cNot only did the VRI-vulnerable group rely more on vision to tell them how they were oriented, but they also found visual motion to be more powerful in evoking the sensation of moving through the scene,\u201d added Harris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\">\u201cOn Earth, the brain has to constantly decide whether a given acceleration is due to a person\u2019s movements or to gravity. This decision is helped by the fact that we normally move at right angles to gravity. But if a person\u2019s perception of gravity is altered by the visual environment or by removing gravity, this distinction becomes much harder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe findings reported in this paper could be helpful when we land people on the Moon again, on Mars, or on comets or asteroids, as low-gravity environments might lead some people to interpret their self-motion differently<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2013<span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">with potentially catastrophic results,\u201d says Harris.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The findings could also be helpful for virtual reality game designers, as certain virtual environments may lead to differences in how players interpret and move through the game.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Researchers say that the findings may also<span class=\"x_apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>inform models of how aging may affect the ability to move around and to balance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What feels
