{"id":329462,"date":"2023-02-21T15:33:31","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T20:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=329462"},"modified":"2025-07-30T15:29:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T19:29:18","slug":"two-professors-receive-100000-in-cihr-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2023\/02\/21\/two-professors-receive-100000-in-cihr-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Two professors receive $100,000 in CIHR funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two York professors have each received $100,000 from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to fund projects set to improve pediatric palliative care and vaccine supply management. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leeat Granek<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"352\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2019\/10\/Leeat-Granek-SCOOP.jpg\" alt=\"Associate professor Leeat Granek\" class=\"wp-image-268608\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Leeat Granek<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor<strong> Leeat Granek<\/strong>, of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Health<\/a>, received a $100,000 grant to research the accessibility of pediatric palliative care for Canadian children and families. Early use of pediatric palliative care has been shown to lead to positive results \u2013 for example, less pain or improved decision making around end-of-life planning \u2013 in disease or treatment trajectory. However, the challenge is that it remains underused in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Granek\u2019s research will look to better understand why that is by exploring the barriers and facilitators to early integration by interviewing pediatric oncology clinicians, palliative healthcare personnel, psychologists and social workers, adolescent patients, and caregivers. The objective is to create policy recommendations aimed at improving access to care for all Canadian children and families who need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reason this is so important is because there are extremely high stakes for real people in the real world. These are sick children who are suffering. Their families are suffering. We can\u2019t take away all their suffering, but, palliative care is this resource, that can help manage that - whether it\u2019s physical, psychological, or emotional pain,\u201d says Granek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fuminori Toyasaki<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2020\/03\/toyasaki.jpg\" alt=\"Fuminori Toyasaki\" class=\"wp-image-274349\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fuminori Toyasaki<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor <strong>Fuminori Toyasaki<\/strong>, from the School of Administrative Studies in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies (LA&amp;PS)<\/a>, has received $100,000 to further his research of vaccine supply management through the Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies, which operates within the CIHR. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the COVID-19 crisis, the challenges around vaccine manufacturing and supplies were well publicized. However, those challenges are not just limited to the recent pandemic. Even recently, Canada reported shortages of shingles, hepatitis A and B, as well as rabies vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Low vaccine coverage \u2013 below the socially optimal level of vaccination to ensure widespread societal health \u2013 is a concern here and internationally. Titled \"Designing public vaccine procurement contracts to secure a socially optimal level of vaccination,\" Toyasaki\u2019s research will study how vaccine development can be hampered by regulatory approval and uncertainty around the timing of high demand, but especially the complex relationship between government agencies and private manufacturers of vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their cross-purposes, in particular, can create obstacles towards achieving higher vaccine coverage: government buyers want to bargain down the procurement price to control their financial expenditure, which hurts the manufacturers' profit margin and results in insufficient capacity building. Toyasaki\u2019s objective is to work towards exploring contract terms that can align the objectives of the two players to achieve the optimal level of vaccination \u2013 especially for any crisis that may still be ahead. \u201cThis current ongoing project is not only about this pandemic, but possible future pandemics,\u201d says Toyasaki.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>York
