{"id":330938,"date":"2023-03-17T15:09:12","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T20:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=330938"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:27:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:27:58","slug":"york-marks-international-day-for-the-elimination-of-racial-discrimination-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2023\/03\/17\/york-marks-international-day-for-the-elimination-of-racial-discrimination-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"York marks International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>La version fran\u00e7aise suit la version anglaise.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear York community members,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuesday, March 21 marks the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/end-racism-day\" target=\"_blank\">International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination<\/a>, which commemorates the day in 1960 that police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid \"pass laws.\" Racism, xenophobia and intolerance continue to be pervasive in societies worldwide, including in Canada. York stands against all forms of injustice and prejudice fueled by racial discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research conducted by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/trackinginjustice.ca\/analysis-policing-colonialism-and-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\">(In)Justice Project<\/a> shows that Black and Indigenous people are disproportionately affected by excessive force from the police and incidents have risen over the past three years. Black and Indigenous people account for 27 per cent of fatal police shootings where the race of the victim was known, despite representing a combined 8.7 per cent of the Canadian population. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohrc.on.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/A%20Disparate%20Impact%20Second%20interim%20report%20on%20the%20TPS%20inquiry%20executive%20summary.pdf#overlay-context=en\/disparate-impact-second-interim-report-inquiry-racial-profiling-and-racial-discrimination-black\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Disparate Impact<\/a>,\u201d an interim report by the Ontario Human Rights Commission, found that between 2013 and 2017 Black people in Toronto were nearly 20 times more likely to be fatally shot by police than white people. <a href=\"https:\/\/data.torontopolice.on.ca\/pages\/race-based-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Race and Identity-Based Data Collection (RBDC) Strategy<\/a> from the Toronto Police has also found that officers were more likely to use force against Black residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the role that universities play in dismantling systemic barriers, York University committed to undertake a review of campus security and explore alternative models for community safety in response to a recommendation in the University\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/abr\/action-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Action Plan on Black Inclusion<\/a>. The Action Plan accompanies the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/abr\/framework\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Framework on Black Inclusion<\/a>, which lays the foundation and blueprint for addressing systemic racism, specifically anti-Black racism. The year-long review concluded in late 2022 and the final report with recommendations will be released to the York community soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>York has recently posted an overview of its first pan-University <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/vpepc\/edi-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy<\/a> which will lay the foundation for the work ahead. The DEDI Strategy is organized around five strategic directions: Teaching and Learning, Research and Innovation, Representation and Success, Leadership and Capacity Building and Campus Climate and Environment.&nbsp;It augments existing frameworks, including the Framework and Action Plan on Black Inclusion and the <a href=\"https:\/\/indigenous.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/08\/Indigenous-Framework-for-York-University-A-Guide-to-Action.pdf?x29983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indigenous Framework for York University: A Guide for Action<\/a>, which affirms York\u2019s commitment to decolonization and creating access for Indigenous peoples. To combat racism and white supremacy, meaningful consultation and movement on the actions within these initiatives must be ongoing. As such, York continues to action its commitment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/six-priorities-for-action\/living-well-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Academic Plan<\/a> priority of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/six-priorities-for-action\/living-well-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Living Well Together<\/a>, which includes systematic efforts to embed human rights, decolonization, equity, diversity and inclusion training across the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we call on the community to engage in those efforts contributing to a more equitable world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you. L\u2019\u00e9valuation, qui a dur\u00e9 un an, s\u2019est achev\u00e9e fin&nbsp;2022 et le rapport final, assorti de recommandations, sera bient\u00f4t transmis \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 de York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>York a r\u00e9cemment publi\u00e9 un aper\u00e7u de sa premi\u00e8re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/vpepc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/310\/2023\/03\/230309-YorkCPA-DEDI-Overview-FR-final_CW_r2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strat\u00e9gie de d\u00e9colonisation, d\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9, de diversit\u00e9 et d\u2019inclusion (DEDI)<\/a> panuniversitaire qui pose les jalons du travail \u00e0 accomplir. La strat\u00e9gie DEDI s\u2019articule autour de cinq orientations strat\u00e9giques&nbsp;: Enseignement et apprentissage; recherche et innovation; repr\u00e9sentation et succ\u00e8s; leadership et renforcement des capacit\u00e9s; climat et environnement des campus. Elle compl\u00e8te les cadres existants, notamment le Cadre et le Plan d\u2019action sur l\u2019inclusion des personnes noires et le <a href=\"https:\/\/indigenous.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/08\/Indigenous-Framework-for-York-University-A-Guide-to-Action.pdf?x29983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cadre strat\u00e9gique autochtone pour l\u2019Universit\u00e9 York&nbsp;:<u> <\/u>un guide d\u2019action<\/a> (en anglais), qui affirme l\u2019engagement de York en faveur de la d\u00e9colonisation et de l\u2019acc\u00e8s pour les peuples autochtones. Pour lutter contre le racisme et la supr\u00e9matie blanche, la consultation et la mise en \u0153uvre des actions d\u00e9finies dans le cadre de ces initiatives doivent \u00eatre continues. \u00c0 ce titre, York poursuit son engagement en faveur de la priorit\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/fr\/six-priorites-dintervention\/bien-vivre-ensemble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bien vivre ensemble<\/a> du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/fr\/six-priorites-dintervention\/bien-vivre-ensemble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plan acad\u00e9mique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9<\/a>, qui comprend des efforts syst\u00e9matiques pour int\u00e9grer la formation aux droits de la personne, \u00e0 la d\u00e9colonisation, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9, \u00e0 la diversit\u00e9 et \u00e0 l\u2019inclusion dans l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019Universit\u00e9.
