{"id":343158,"date":"2023-10-19T14:13:17","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T19:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=343158"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:37:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:37:28","slug":"model-for-engaged-teaching-basis-for-conference-presentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2023\/10\/19\/model-for-engaged-teaching-basis-for-conference-presentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Model for Engaged Teaching basis for conference presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#e31837\"><em><strong>By Elaine Smith&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">York University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/teachingcommons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/02\/Updated_Engaged-Teaching_Feb-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Model for Engaged Teaching<\/a> (MET) will take centre stage during an upcoming presentation by educational developers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/teachingcommons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teaching Commons<\/a> (TC) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/issotl.com\/issotl23\/issotl23-conference-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Society for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference<\/a> in November.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Genevi\u00e8ve Maheux-Pelletier<\/strong>, director of TC, and <strong>Mandy Frake-Mistak<\/strong>, a TC educational developer, will present preliminary findings from the qualitative research they are conducting into MET\u2019s impact at York. They are currently conducting focus groups with faculty to obtain feedback about the model and how it shapes an instructor\u2019s practice in the context of their own teaching and learning experience, disciplinary tradition and prior exposure, as well as whether it is used at York for activities such as operationalizing \u201cexcellent\u201d teaching, helping faculty articulate their practice, and mapping out professional growth related to teaching and learning.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"802\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-343166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/10\/image.png 802w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/10\/image-400x272.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This image represents engaged teaching practices: the left side focuses on improving one\u2019s own teaching, while the focus of the right is on dissemination of teaching-related knowledge in a manner that is appropriately public. For a more in-depth description, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/teachingcommons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2021\/02\/Updated_Engaged-Teaching_Feb-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this document<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur job at TC is to think deeply about teaching and learning and look at ways our York community of instructors can think about teaching in much broader strokes than just through their own individual classroom lens,\u201d said Maheux-Pelletier, who co-chaired the Sub-Committee on Research and Innovation in Teaching and Learning that produced York\u2019s Model for Engaged Teaching in 2019 (updated in 2021). \u201cThe model looks at what informs teaching, and considers four dimensions: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an instructor\u2019s classroom practice;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sharing practice;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>systematic, intentional use of evidence in teaching; and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>formal research: the scholarship of teaching and learning.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The diagram of the model adopted and adapted by York shows flexibility and an interplay between the dimensions that remind faculty that tasks may be more than one thing rather than neatly categorized. It also shows the interplay between tasks and, says Maheux-Pelletier, \u201copens up perspectives and opportunities to see teaching in a richer way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gives people language and anchors their practice differently and in an aspirational fashion; their practice may develop over time.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frake-Mistak noted that the MET is the starting point for \u201cchanging the perception of what it means to be a teacher.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She noted that it is a more robust practice than many people realize. Instructors tend to downplay all the tasks that they take for granted, such as building relationships and creating an inclusive classroom environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to shift the language we use and the perception of teaching,\u201d said Frake-Mistak. \u201cThere\u2019s so much that teachers do that can be rendered invisible in an institution of this size.\"&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Added Maheux-Pelletier, \u201cThe MET helps instructors grow over time with intentionality.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The preliminary findings of their research indicate that the model is helpful in defining concepts such as teaching excellence from a broader perspective than just the classroom, because it takes into account myriad activities, such as reflecting on teaching, developing a curriculum and writing a review or meta-analysis for a journal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we presented the model itself at last year\u2019s conference, people grabbed onto it as a productive way of thinking about teaching,\u201d said Maheux-Pelletier. \u201cThey seemed to find it useful.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frake-Mistak expressed hope that the preliminary data will be only the beginning of a broader study.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are more boundaries around discussing teaching and learning than around research and we\u2019d love to tear them down,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUltimately, from a professional standpoint, teaching is a scholarly practice and we need to recognize the power and significance it brings along with it, as well as the responsibility.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maheux-Pelletier noted that the team at TC is involved in the scholarship of teaching and learning in addition to the work they do to disseminate evidence-based information through workshops, seminars and courses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re actually a group of scholars who specialize in teaching and learning,\u201d she said. \u201cYes, we are service providers and our work is influenced both by the literature and by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/teachingcommons\/cv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer
