{"id":398011,"date":"2025-08-01T14:06:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T18:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/?p=398011"},"modified":"2025-08-04T14:08:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T18:08:01","slug":"new-ai-tools-in-eclass-to-empower-instructors-advance-student-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/08\/01\/new-ai-tools-in-eclass-to-empower-instructors-advance-student-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"New AI tools in eClass to empower instructors, advance student learning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features within eClass, York University\u2019s learning platform, will build upon the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Information Technology<\/a> department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/04\/09\/power-up-york-us-in-house-ai-platform-answers-call-for-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sector-leading<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2025\/06\/11\/york-wins-national-award-for-in-house-ai-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">award-winning<\/a> adoption of innovative technology.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On Aug. 30, York University will introduce a suite of AI-powered tools in eClass designed to enhance both how instructors teach and how students learn. Building on York\u2019s award-winning work with its in-house generative artificial intelligence, YU-AURA, the new features mark a major expansion of AI support within the learning management system.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first new tool is a course AI assistant designed to alleviate a common burden for instructors \u2013 repeatedly answering questions already addressed in the syllabi. Professors can upload their syllabus and course documents to the assistant, allowing students to access a course-specific chatbot 24\/7. Instructors can then enable the assistant to be added to their course. The assistant began as a pilot last year, used by two professors \u2013 <strong>Donald Ipperciel<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/glendon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glendon College<\/a> and <strong>Pooja Vashisth<\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lassonde School of Engineering<\/a>.\u00a0While it was launched with no formal publicity, the assistant was available to all instructors, and through word of mouth and discovery the assistant ended up used in more than 20 courses \u2013\u00a0far surpassing the expected three.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"758\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/agent_course_assistant-1024x758.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-398017\" style=\"width:636px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/agent_course_assistant-1024x758.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/agent_course_assistant-400x296.png 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/agent_course_assistant-1536x1137.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2025\/08\/agent_course_assistant.png 1708w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">On the left: the AI course assistant bot providing reminders of assignment due dates. Drawing from course section descriptions, the plugin tool can generate class notes, quizzes and other learning activities \u2013&nbsp;automatically formatting and embedding them into the course. \u201cOther tools require instructors to copy and paste AI-generated content,\u201d says <strong>Patrick Thibaudeau<\/strong>, director of IT Innovation &amp; Academic Technologies at York. \u201cThis one actually builds inside eClass. Created specifically for students, it functions like a private tutor and study coach. By accessing the module through eClass, the AI tool can generate content with which students can quiz themselves or request help with specific topics. These new features offer a secure alternative \u2013&nbsp;and a better one.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All tools will be available in eClass starting Aug. 30. Thibaudeau\u2019s team is collaborating with the Teaching Commons, Student Services and other University partners to promote the tools and provide guidance on how to integrate them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thibaudeau sees this rollout as the beginning of a broader evolution. \u201cWe\u2019re IT folks, not educators. But our job is to listen and build what instructors and students need,\u201d he says. \u201cAI gives us new ways to do that. These tools aren\u2019t just tech \u2013&nbsp;they\u2019re about improving teaching and learning at York.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More features are in development. Building from a suggestion by a faculty member, one upcoming enhancement will allow students to review their previous quiz attempts, identify incorrect answers and receive targeted explanations to help them improve. Another, suggested by faculty, may assist with grading short answer or math-based questions \u2013&nbsp;allowing instructors to focus more on engagement and less on administrative tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was collaboration that led to the creation of these tools in the first place, notably, with the two professors invoved with the pilot. Ipperciel initiated research into the use of chatbots for enhancing student experiences and contributing to coding the AI Course Assistant. Vashisth contributed to the development of the AI Course Assistant by assigning two students to assist with the integration within eClass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe instructional design ideas and learning assistant tools were created not because someone told us to,\u201d says Thibaudeau, \u201cbut by listening to instructors, watching how students interact with their courses and imagining how we could make things better.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UIT will continue to listen, adapt and improve \u2013 not only the new tools, but what comes next. \u201cThese aren\u2019t final products,\u201d says Thibaudeau. \u201cThey\u2019re starting points.
