She was recognized for her contributions to its mission of delivering science\u2011backed resources for children from birth through age 18 to support positive mental health and build coping skills.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2026\/01\/Rebecca-Pillai-Riddell.png\" alt=\"Rebecca Pillai Riddell\" class=\"wp-image-403435\" style=\"width:304px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2026\/01\/Rebecca-Pillai-Riddell.png 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2026\/01\/Rebecca-Pillai-Riddell-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rebecca Pillai Riddell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSMSK upholds a mission near and dear to my heart \u2013 making psychological science accessible for preventing and moderating mental health challenges for all Canadian children and families,\u201d says Pillai Riddell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pillai Riddell is a professor in the Department of Psychology and holds the Tier 1 York Research Chair in Pain and Mental Health. She also directs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/ouchlab\/#:~:text=Our%20Laboratory%20primarily%20focuses%20on,within%20North%20America%20and%20beyond.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opportunities to Understand Childhood Hurt (OUCH) Laboratory<\/a>, where she leads research on how infants and young children experience and regulate pain, particularly in early\u2011life medical contexts such as vaccinations and neonatal care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Widely recognized as a leader in her field, Pillai Riddell has contributed to more than 100 peer\u2011reviewed publications and is a member of the Royal Society of Canada\u2019s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Her work has earned honours including the American Pain Society\u2019s Jeffrey Lawson Award for Advocacy in Children\u2019s Pain and the Canadian Pain Society\u2019s Outstanding Mentorship Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pillai Riddell has worked closely with SMSK since 2018, first as a member of its board of trustees and, for the past two years, as a member of its executive board. Through these roles, she has contributed her expertise to advance the organization\u2019s efforts to promote coping skills in young people. For example, she, her lab and postdoctoral fellow <strong>Katie Di Pierdomenico<\/strong> conducted a large\u2011scale review on digital interventions for preventative mental health in partnership with SMSK. That work helped advance SMSK\u2019s programs, which also support parents, caregivers, educators and professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a clinical psychologist and a basic behavioural scientist, breaking out of the lab and getting our evidence\u2011base out to Canadian families is critical,\u201d says Pillai Riddell, whose work with SMSK has reached hundreds of thousands of children, youth and the professionals who support them each year. For her, the 2025 Major Contributions Award underscores the significance of the work being done through the organization. \u201cSMSK stands as a national beacon for getting psych science where it belongs \u2013 in the minds of parents, children and the front\u2011line people who support them,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SMSK recognized Pillai Riddell for her influence on its ability to fulfill that mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe has been an extraordinary partner to our organization,\u201d says Anne Lovegrove, president and executive director of SMSK. \u201cHer insight, generosity
