{"id":4252,"date":"2005-03-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-03-23T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2005\/03\/23\/york-alumnus-paul-sarossy-wins-another-genie-for-cinematography\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T11:53:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T15:53:24","slug":"york-alumnus-paul-sarossy-wins-another-genie-for-cinematography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2005\/03\/23\/york-alumnus-paul-sarossy-wins-another-genie-for-cinematography\/","title":{"rendered":"York alumnus Paul Sarossy wins another Genie for cinematography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>York alumnus Paul Sarossy (BFA \u201886) won a 2005 Genie Award for cinematography Monday for his work on <I>Head in the Clouds<\/I>, a Second World War drama starring Charlize Theron which won four awards overall, including editing, original score and costume design.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG hspace=\"8\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20050323\/sarossy younger.jpeg\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"8\" border=\"0\">Of the seven former York students nominated by the Academy of Canadian Cinema &amp; Television for their work as producer, director, writer or cinematographer, only Sarossy came home a winner in a night dominated by Quebec films and filmmakers. The Quebec sweep of the awards is nothing new, says York film historian Seth Feldman of the Faculty of Fine Arts\u2019 Department of Film &amp; Video.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Right: Genie Award-winning cinematographer Paul Sarossy <\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>\"The balance between English and&nbsp;French Canada's presence at the Genies varies from year to year,\" Feldman said, \"so it's not all that surprising when Quebec has a particularly good year like this one.\"<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Feldman said the films made in Quebec&nbsp;generally have a much higher standing in their own community, than English Canadian films have in theirs, and relatively few of those films become accessible to English speaking audiences.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>\"Most go on the festival circuit, are screened briefly in art house cinemas and then disappear,\" he said. \"Television, the main outlet for Canadian cinema, can't attract large audiences with subtitled prints. Nor do dubbed films work very well. For a largely monolingual English Canadian audience, film hasn't done much to bridge the two solitudes.\"<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Sarossy, who was born in Barrie, Ont.,&nbsp;in 1963, studied in York\u2019s Department of Film &amp; Video from 1982-1986&nbsp;and went on to success in numerous films, both as cinematographer and director. He has now won five Genie Awards in his career including this year\u2019s. Sarossy won his first Genie in 1994 (<I>Exotica<\/I>) and has won each time he was nominated since then: including 1997 (<I>The Sweet Hereafter)<\/I>, 2000 (<I>Felicia's Journey<\/I>) and 2003 (<I>Perfect Pie<\/I>).<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Sarossy explained how his&nbsp;career got started, after studying at York, in an interview with UK writer&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jigsawlounge.co.uk\/film\/sarossyinterview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><FONT color=\"#3333ff\">Neil Young<\/FONT><\/A> in 2003: \"When I left film school it was 1986 and that was an amazing time for young directors and cinematographers in Toronto,\" Sarossy said. \"It was the beginning of the whole music-video scene, with lots of low-budget commercials being made and people were hired straight out of film school. It was a tremendous break for me to go from nothing to being a fully-fledged cinematographer, I didn\u2019t have to work my way up through the whole established union hierarchy of jobs.\"<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P>The team of David \u2018Sudz\u2019 Sutherland, who studied at York\u2019s Department of Film &amp; Video from 1989-1991, and partner Jennifer Holness (BA \u201992), was nominated three times for the romantic comedy, <I>Love, Sex and Eating the Bones<\/I>. The film, produced by Holness, was up for Best Motion Picture, won by <I>The Triplets of Belleville<\/I>, while Sutherland was nominated for Achievements in Direction and Original Screenplay. The couple, who met at York, were featured in the&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/archive\/index.asp?Article=2435\" name=\"Feb. 25, 2004 \"><FONT color=\"#3333ff\">Feb. 25, 2004 <\/FONT><\/A>issue of <EM>YFile <\/EM>and in the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/ycom\/yorku_pastissues.html\" name=\"Summer 2004\"><FONT color=\"#3333ff\">Summer 2004<\/FONT><\/A> <EM>YorkU<\/EM> magazine.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>York alumna Bronwen Hughes (BFA \u201885) was nominated for Achievement in Direction for <I>Stander<\/I>, the true-life story of Andr\u00e9 Stander, South African police captain turned bank robber. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>A trio of writers with York connections were nominated for Adapted Screenplay: John Palmer, who taught courses in playwrighting in 1991-1992, alumnus Jaie Laplante (BFA \u201892) and Todd Klinck, who studied at York from 1993 to 1995, worked on the script for <I>Sugar<\/I>, which Palmer also directed.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Carl Bessai (BFA \u201889 &amp; MFA \u201892), director and co-producer of <I>emile<\/I>, for which actor Ian McKellen received a nomination for best-actor, scored a coup by persuading McKellen, who played Gandalf in the <EM>Lord of the Rings<\/EM> triology, to star in this film about a man exploring his Canadian roots and looking to redeem his relationship with his niece.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The full list of nominees and award winners is available at the official <A href=\"http:\/\/www.genieawards.ca\/genie25\/main.cfm\"><U><FONT color=\"#0000ff\">Genie Awards<\/U><\/FONT><\/A> Web site.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>York alumnus Paul Sarossy (BFA \u201886) won a 2005 Genie Award for cinematography for his work on <i>Head in the Clouds<\/i>, a Second World War drama starring Charlize Theron...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_kad_blocks_custom_css":"","_kad_blocks_head_custom_js":"","_kad_blocks_body_custom_js":"","_kad_blocks_footer_custom_js":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[],"yfileauthor":[],"qualifier":[],"yfile-author":[],"tags-to-show":[],"workflow":[],"class_list":["post-4252","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-latest-news"],"acf":{"internal_publish_date":null,"original_image":null},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
