Founder Fundamentals EP 02: Crafting a Business Plan Workshop with Golden Johnson

Turning an idea into a thriving venture requires more than passion—it requires a roadmap. That was the focus of the second session of the 2025 Fall Founder Fundamentals, led by Golden Johnson, global branding expert and founder of House of Gold. With years of experience guiding early-stage to Series B entrepreneurs, Golden offered a practical framework to transform raw ideas into credible, fundable, and future-proof businesses.

Beyond the Basics: Why Plans Matter

Golden began by stressing that a business plan is not just paperwork, but a tool to secure funding, attract partners, and provide clarity. In Canada, she noted, 50% of businesses survive five years only if they have a clear plan—highlighting its role as a survival strategy, not a luxury.

She outlined three types of plans every entrepreneur should know:

  • Funding Plans – sharp, numbers-driven roadmaps tailored for banks, investors, and grants.
  • Partner Plans – blueprints for collaboration, defining roles, equity, and vision alignment.
  • Clarity Plans – internal strategies that keep founders grounded in long-term growth.

Across all types, the non-negotiables remain: credibility, cash flow alignment, and clear milestones.

Knowing Your Customers and Competitors

A recurring theme was customer clarity. Golden warned that “everyone” is not a target market—the fastest way to burn cash. Instead, founders were guided to build customer personas, identifying buying triggers, values, and behaviors.

She also challenged entrepreneurs to map competitors not just in their own industry, but indirect ones as well—like Netflix competing with cafés for consumer dollars. The key is finding a wedge: an area where your strength meets their weakness.

Building Smarter, Not Bigger

Through examples from Uber, Sephora, and Tesla, Golden showed how even global brands win and lose depending on their discipline. Uber scaled referrals but cut expensive billboards. Sephora leaned on Instagram ads but dropped ineffective flyers. Tesla, meanwhile, faltered when inventory outpaced cash flow—reminding founders to always align plans with finances.

She introduced tools like the 30-Day Channel Test and the Stop-Shift Rule, encouraging founders to experiment fast, measure results, and cut failing strategies before emotions cloud judgment.

From Idea to Impact

Golden closed by urging founders to choose their plan type—funding, partner, or clarity—and commit to reviewing and refining it. A plan isn’t static; it’s a living roadmap. She emphasized mentorship and accountability, noting that Canadian entrepreneurs with mentors are twice as likely to survive five years.

“Writing a business plan isn’t the win,” she said. “Using it, testing it, and adapting it—that’s how you win.”
