Event Details

The York University Retirees' Association will be participating in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon Charity Challenge again in October 2022. This year, there is a new lead sponsor for the event: TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), taking over from Scotiabank.

While the larger, more competitive Toronto Waterfront Marathon has been announced for October 16th, the option of a “virtual” Charity Challenge is again being offered this year – this allows participants to do the 5 km on their own or with others -- even to spread out the 5 km over several weeks between September 16 and October 16! Within this “virtual” framework, YURA plans to hold its own 5 km walk at High Park on Tuesday, October 4 and a second 5 km walk on the Tom Taylor Trail in Newmarket on Friday, October 14 -- for those preferring to participate with other YURA members.

YURA's ultimate goal is to raise enough money for an endowed fund to support in perpetuity the three YURA Graduate Student Awards given annually. To date, more than $90,000 has been raised toward the $115,000 goal for this endowment. We are getting very close to achieving our goal, so we encourage you to take part!

To donate

If you prefer not to participate but would like to sponsor the YURA team or one of the individual participants, tax deductible donations can be made online at:

When donating online, please decline paying administrative fees --YURA will be covering all such costs so that 100% of funds donated are directed to the scholarship endowment.

Let's all do our part to help make getting an education possible for deserving students who struggle financially! You can have some fun, get some exercise, and make a meaningful contribution to YURA’s graduate student awards!

Background

The Toronto Waterfront Marathon Charity Challenge unites the spirit of both runners and walkers with a unique fundraising program to support local charities in our community. Participants walk or run for different reasons, largely to support one of many important causes.

In 2021, participants raised over $3.08 million, much needed funds in support of 151 official charity partners. In fact, since the Charity Challenge began in 2003, more than $48 million has been raised, making a significant impact in our communities.

Participants register online for the event (either for a 5K, Half Marathon or full Marathon) to raise funds for their charity through a fundraising page generated by Race Roster, an online application used by the Canada Running Series, the group that organizes the annual Charity Challenge. Participants complete a run or walk (5 km, half marathon, full marathon) either virtually between September 16 and October 16 anywhere; or in-person at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon held in October, this year on Sunday, October 16th. In YURA's case, we generally walk the 5 km. For the past three years, YURA members have participated in the Charity Challenge (previously sponsored by Scotiabank), walking 5 km to raise funds for YURA sponsored graduate awards at York. Due to the pandemic, the Charity Challenge in both 2020 and 2021 were held as virtual events (although a 10 km Toronto Waterfront option was also offered in 2021).

In each year since 2019, YURA has applied and has been approved as an eligible charity, with the help of the York U Advancement Office. In 2019, $11,821 was raised by eight YURA participants; in 2020, nineteen YURA members raised $24,500; and in 2021, eleven YURA participants raised $25,630. In total, more than $71,000 has been raised for the endowment for the YURA Graduate Student Awards through our participation in the Charity Challenge.

Think of joining us for one of our 5km walks in October 2022! It’s fun, it allows us to visit with other YURA members, it's healthy for us, and it opens doors for students who would not otherwise have the opportunity.
