The area of Space Science encompasses many fields: the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, atmospheric science, earth science and planetary science. Research in astronomy and astrophysics covers theoretical and observational investigations of the solar system, optical, infrared and radio studies of the galactic and extragalactic universe and tests of General Relativity.Reasearch in atmospheric sciences includes the study of antmospheric chemistry and dynamics. Research in earth science within CRESS ranges from the large scale geodynamic processes in the Earth's core and mantle to spatial analysis and application of GIS (geographic information systems) to surface data related to mineral exploration and environmental studies Research in planetary science includes the study of planets, moons and planetary systems with special emphasis on the study of the Martian atmsophere and surface.
