Readings for Wed March 18

Please read the two Daisuke Miyao chapters on Sessue Hayakawa in the reading packet BEFORE class.

“A Star is Born: The Transnational Success of the Cheat and Its Race and Gender Politics,” and “Americanization and Nationalism: The Japanese Reception of Sessue Hayakawa.”

With some similarities between The Cheat and Birth of a Nation, one difference really stood out for me. In The Cheat, the Japanese antagonist was portrayed by a Japanese actor. In Birth of a Nation, the role of the black antagonist was done by a white actor in blackface.
