The focus of Dr. Tamim’s research has revolved around the following areas:
1) Maternal Child Health
Research in this area has covered a variety of topics including c-section, Group B strep, consanguinity and congenital abnormalities, breastfeeding, pre–conceptional folic acid intake, treatment of febrile children and others. Recently, and in collaboration with other researchers, Dr. Tamim assessed nurses’ and pediatricians’ beliefs about the concept of “nipple confusion” and about practices / preferences related to breastfeeding supplementation methods for newborns whose mothers are temporarily unable to exclusively breastfeed. This project took place in Toronto Central LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) hospitals. Currently, Dr. Tamim along with colleagues are investigating teenage pregnancy and mothering in York Region, Canada, using a strength-based perspective that focuses on resilience in the face of risk.
2) Adolescent Health Risk Behaviors
The focus has been mostly on smoking and weight control measures.
3) Trauma
Funded by the Center of Research Expertise for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders, Dr. Tamim recently assessed the effectiveness of a workplace Tai Chi intervention to improve musculoskeletal fitness among female computer workers. Currently, and funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada- sport participation research initiative, she is examining the factors influencing older adults in terms of enrolment in a locally-offered Tai Chi program, with special sensitivity to any ethnoculturally-based issues that arise and examining Tai Chi program’s effects in terms of improved fitness and psychological wellbeing,
4) Other
As an epidemiologist, Dr. Tamim has worked in other research areas including molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases, diabetes and others.
