GuidelinesKinesiology and Health Science 5000.00: MKine Research Paper. An extensive review of the literature with an application to a selected sport. Areas to be covered may include: physiology, psychology, biomechanics, technical, tactical, coaching methodology and other areas related to coaching. Evaluation in this course includes an oral examination of the student by a committee of faculty members. No course credit. The research paper requires a Supervisory Committee which will consist of two full time graduate coaching faculty members. One graduate faculty member will be designated as the primary advisor and the other will be the academic program coordinator or designate. The Supervisory Committee must be selected before the end of the second term of study for the Masters degree. The students Master/mentor coach may act as a consultant for the Research Paper. The student will be required to defend the research paper at an oral examination. The oral presentation defense will be examined by the Research Paper Examining Committee which will consist of the Supervisory Committee plus the Graduate Director or his/her designate. The three graduate faculty members vote. The following conditions are voted on by the Examining Committee: *Accepted With no Revision- The oral examination requirement is met if the Committee unanimously accepts the Research Paper with no revisions. *Accepted Pending Specified Revisions- The oral examination requirement is met if the Committee accepts the Research Paper with specified revisions. These specified revisions could range from typographical errors or changes of a minor editorial nature, to specified insertions or deletions which do not radically modify the development or argument of the Paper. The Committee must specify such changes with precision. - Specified revisions are required if all members are in agreement with this status, OR if there is one vote for major revisions, then specified revisions are expected. *Referred Pending Major Revisions- A Research Paper is referred for major revision if any of the following conditions exist: - the Committee agrees that the Research Paper requires
substantive changes in order to be acceptable; or, - there is one vote for failure; In this situation, one of the following procedures, agreed upon by the Committee before the examination is adjourned, must be used to finalize the oral results: a) the Committee will reconvene within twelve months to continue the oral examination; OR b) the revised Research Paper will be circulated within twelve months to all members, who will determine whether they feel the stipulated requirements have been met. *Failed- The Research Paper failed if there are a minimum of two votes for failure. In the event of failure, detailed reasons must be supplied in writing to the Programme Director and candidate within two weeks. Time Limits on Specified RevisionsAll specified revisions must be completed within six months of the date of the oral examination. These six months are considered to be outside of the time limitations on the degree programme. Failure to complete these specified revisions within the six months will result in a failure on the thesis/dissertation.
