This course examines the social organization of work in contemporary Canadian society. Course topics include the meaning of work, changes in the organization of the labour process and the labour market, new management strategies, the role of unions in the 'new economy', and the implications of new technologies for the organization of work. Particular attention is paid to patterns of labour market segmentation based on class, race, and gender, the growth of nonstandard forms of employment, and the challenges facing Canadian unions. The course situates the Canadian workplace, labour market, and labour movement in a global context by examining the theme of globalization and the implications of the changing global economy for work and workers in Canada. Through this course, students will gain an understanding of both the social organization of the contemporary labour market, and some of the major issues facing workers, unions and employers.
