Course Description:
This course seeks to examine social movements from a Canadian perspective. The course focuses upon a recent text on the subject by Rod Bantjieas. In the course we will examine the causes, characteristics, and consequences of social movements, particularly in the Canadian context. Some of the movements to be invested include: the IWA or First International, the CCF or Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, The Civil Rights and Feminist Movements, Latin American Movements, and the recent Anti-Globalization Movement. The course will assist students in understanding the nature of both Collective Behaviours and Social Movements. It will cover the theoretical, empirical and methodological components in understanding social movements.
