This workshop will walk you through an example of how to create a Viewlet with Qarbon's Viewlet Builder software, providing you with the tools to create your own Viewlets for your community's needs.

This workshop is a continuation of the DDI power point presentation given at last year's DLI Training in Kingston. It is intended as a primer for those interested in understanding the basic concepts of the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) and the Data Type Definition (DTD) statements. This time participants will have the opportunity to take a closer look, examine the tags, determine criteria for selection and create an XML template.

SPSS/Stata/SAS Workshop

This workshop will take you on a quick tour of Stata, SPSS, and SAS. We will examine a data file using each package. Is one more user-friendly than the others? Are there significant differences in the codebooks created? We will also look at creating a frequency and cross-tabulation table in each. Which output screen is easiest to read and interpret? The goal of this workshop is to give you an overview of these products and provide you with the information you need to determine which package fits the requirements of you and your user.

Election 2004 Workshop

This workshop will focus on the process of enhancing a microdata file by adding to it contextual aggregate data. We will work with a Canadian election survey (2004 if possible, or if not, then 2000), and add variables from Elections Canada voting results data, using SPSS/Win, in order to understand the process of producing data to support research in hierarchical linear models.

PCensus

For many years, Queen's has been using PCensus and PCensus with MapPoint. This product provides 1981 through 2001 Census profile data to the EA/DA level with the added feature of extracting 'non-standard' geography (i.e. circles, polygons, and drive-time polygons). This session will give an overview of the software's capabilities.

STC Citation Guide

This paper will first review the citation practices at Statistics Canada and in the data community. A demonstration of the web tool developed from the proposal presented at the DLI External Advisory Committee last May 2004 will follow. Finally we will examine the potential benefits of a citation guide for STC and users.
