The oral culture of the Native community is a form of reaffirming connections between one and its identity through the art of storytelling. This dominant aspect of Native culture was embedded through traditions whether of history or modern contemporary interpretations. Rebecca Belmore has incorporated the element of storytelling through multiple installations with performances whether conveying memories or experiences of life.
As a visual artist, Belmore mostly uses silent performances, she said silence is more powerful than words, especially when there is more than one story to tell through only one object or one image. Her performances, which incorporate many elements, tell the story of a whole nation and still there will be something unspoken or forgotten. The storytelling is an endless process, which goes on as the history of a people evolves.
