TIME-TIME-TIME - 1990

The performance was in a storefront space located on Queen Street West.  Belmore was seated at a table witha microphone, some paper, and a number of pencils enclosed in a white to white room.  She wrote consistently as possible and spoke whatever she wrote over a period of twelve hours.  Speakers were placed outside the space which amplified her voice that would be heard amongst the streets of Toronto.  It was an installation in which Belmore was the main element. In addition the space was across from a psychiatric hospital which generated a bizarre element to the
performance.  It was like she was institutionalized, locked in the plain white gallery with the glimpsing and observing of people’s curiosity or dismissal.  She had to face reality or the aspect of being an artist. The installation raised doubts by the public about the validity of art.  It was questioned, what is art? *Interpretations vary as to what Time Time Time means. Rebecca Belmore was on display revealing herself as a writer through the process of the work.  She was conveying her thoughts throughout the performance like recording significant points.  The writing then was put on display for the public to view. It was presented as an object for any viewer who wanted to read the words and to interpret their own story from the words.
