General Comments

  1. Most current Canadian legislation (federal, provincial and territorial) is searchable through a common interface, for free, on the CanLII website.
    http://www.canlii.org/
  2. Most pre-Confederation provincial Canadian legislation is searchable through a common interface, for free, on the British North America Legislative Database website.
    https://bnald.lib.unb.ca/
  3. Canadian Legislative Pulse
This service from CCH tracked current bills in all Canadian legislatures. It does not appear to have reappeared yet on Lexis since the acquisition. See https://pulse.lexisnexis.ca/transition_info.html.
CCH Online also provided current consolidations and subject access to many federal and provincial statutes and regulations, as did the corresponding looseleaf volumes, a number of which have since reappeared on LexisNexis. See the July 22, 2014 LexisNexis press release and the July 22, 2014 Wolters Kluwer press release.
  4. Mary K. McLean, Index to Federal and Ontario Statutes
    (Scarborough, Ont. : Carswell, 1993-2000)
    STATS-CAN A375 D275
This service ceased in 2000 as a print product, and continued to be available online from
Captus Press until 2007, when it ceased.
  5. Subject access to much Canadian legislation is also provided by the Canadian Encyclopedic Digest, available in the Westlaw CED database; Halsbury's Laws of Canada, available on LexisNexis, and other secondary works.
  6. Canadian Legislative Concordances, the Westlaw CANCONCORD database, links provincial legislation dealing with the same subtopics for family law, personal property security law, civil procedure, and securities law.
  7. Canadian Statute Citations
(Toronto: Carswell, 1995-) 23 volumes, with irregularly issued cumulative supplements, and monthly updates
    DIG B35 (ALPHANUM)
This content is behind the KeyCite facility for statutes on Westlaw.
  8. The legislation of Canada, Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut is constitutionally required to be enacted in both English and French. Ontario also publishes its laws in both English and French.
  9. Canadian provinces are autonomous within their constitutional spheres. The powers of Parliament are set out in section 91 [via Westlaw] of the Constitution Act, 1867 (below); the powers of the provincial legislatures are set out in section 92 [via Westlaw] The territories (Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut) are creatures of the Canadian Parliament.
  10. Attempts to harmonize Canadian provincial and territorial legislation are made under the auspices of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada.
