Responsible for access hours and bookings, equipment checkout, facility supervision and demos, general digital lab information.

Calendar Description
Introduces photographic practices in a digital environment. Explores camera, tools, techniques and conceptual approaches related to image capture and printing. A digital camera is required. Compulsory supplementary fees. Open to students formally registered in the Cross-Disciplinary Certificate in Digital Media.
Production/Material fee: $65

Teaching Mode

This is a four-hour per week lab course and will consist of illustrated lectures, demonstrations, production time, class discussions, projects and critiques.

Readings/ Textbook
Online readings and references are on the course website under “readings”.
It is recommended that you acquire a reference textbook:
Real World Digital Photography, 2nd edition, Eismann, Duggan, Grey, ISBN 0-321-22372-1
(3rd edition available Oct 2010)
Assigned readings MUST be completed before class.

Specific requirements
Outside of class time, students are expected to dedicate a minimum of 10 additional hours for the creation and production of course work. This time should include photographing, reading, software tutorials web surfing and visiting galleries.

Special Conditions
Respectful and collegial behaviour is required within the labs and other photo areas. Consistent and punctual attendance is mandatory. Attendance is recorded and contributes to your overall grade. 

Withdrawal Deadlines

FA/VISA 2065 is a one-semester course.  The LAST DATE TO DROP this course without academic penalty is November 12. http://www.registrar.yorku.ca/importantdates/index.htm

Academic Honesty

Material Fee: $65

Supply List

  • Digital camera: minimum 6 megapixel, capture in RAW file format capability, manual control capability
  • DVDs or CDs for backing up files or
  • Portable Hard Drive (recommended)

Damage Collection Policy in Photography, Print Media and Time Based Art
All students enrolled in undergraduate Photography, Print Media, Sculpture and Time Based Art courses shall sign a waiver, upon using and borrowing tools and equipment, during the first class of each studio course, which outlines procedures and policies regarding insurance, damage, loss or theft to equipment. Any unpaid damages incurred while students are registered in the program will be charged directly to their student accounts. Waivers will be signed during the first class of each studio course.

In the case of damaged, lost or stolen tools and equipment that are the property of the Dept of Visual Arts, technical staff will determine if the damage is a result of normal wear and tear and if the item is repairable. If it is determined that the damage was the result of abuse and fault of student, the student will be held responsible for the full cost of the repair, or the full cost of replacement if the item is not repairable.
