Triangulation

It is evident that there are many methods that feminists can use to gather research and analysis. Using a multiple methods research strategy is the preferred choice for many feminist researchers. Using more than one method for gathering research provides validity and reliability. The method used to enhance the validity and reliability of qualitative research is known as triangulation. "Triangulation can be described as the use of multiple and diverse data sources and collection techniques to study a single research question or understand complex phenomena" Staley, Shockley-Zalabak, p.250. Triangulation also enhances accuracy of interpretation and confirms that the data collected is not due to chance or circumstance. "Triangulation encourages the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods, thereby maximizing single method benefits while neutralizing single methods drawbacks" Staley, Shockley-Zalabak, p.250. Therefore, the use of multiple methods of data collection protect against biases that are frequently introduced by single method designs.

* Fellow classmates conducted some research, which discusses some examples of triangulation. The first is on Gray's work on the VCR and the second is on Herring's work on CMC on listservs.
