Simon Granovsky-Larsen - "Upsetting Neoliberalism: The End of an Era in Latin America"

Abstract:

Understanding neoliberalism as a set of social and economic policies aimed at the restoration of class power but devoid of any structural economic change, this essay argues that the dominance of neoliberal ideology can be overturned given the timely presentation of alternative programs. The Latin American case is considered at length, both as an example of the rise and challenge to neoliberalism according to this perspective and as a region where alternatives to neoliberalism are currently gaining momentum. Finally, Bolivia under Evo Morales is presented as an example of "post-neoliberalism," where it is argued that neoliberal ideology as has been replaced as the guiding force for state policies and programs.
