Robert T. Muller, Ph.D., C.Psych. completed his clinical fellowship at Harvard in 1994, after which he joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts, and started a trauma assessment service.  He has published widely on the topic of intra-familial trauma:  psychopathology, treatment efficacy, and strategies for intervention.  And his 2010 book on trauma treatment is entitled Trauma and the Avoidant Client: Attachment-Based Strategies for Healing.  Currently in its second printing and in translation, the book earned Dr. Muller the 2011 Written Media Award (best written work of the year on trauma) by the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, where he was recently designated a Fellow of the society for his scholarship in the field.  He is an associate professor and a supervising psychologist at York University, where he is the 2012 winner of the President's University-Wide Teaching Award (for teaching innovation; senior faculty category), and where he was recently principal investigator of a provincially-funded, multi-site program for the treatment of intra-familial trauma.  Dr. Muller founded and edits an academic blog, The Trauma & Mental Health Report, an online magazine that disseminates knowledge on trauma and mental health to the community at large.

Other Teaching-Related Activities

Pedagogical Innovations:

Developed and edited the Trauma and Mental Health Report (formerly the Trauma and Attachment Report), (http://trauma.blog.yorku.ca/), an online free mental health magazine published out of York University’s faculty of health, designed to disseminate accurate knowledge in the area of trauma and mental health to the general public. Launched on Feb. 25, 2011.

Developed an Abnormal Psychology Website (www.yorku.ca/rmuller) that includes hundreds of resources and sites across Canada and the U.S. offering further information on abnormal development and psychiatric disorders. There are links to other abnormal psychology websites, as well as links to national research centres (e.g., Addiction Research Foundation, National Center on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, etc.). Also, this website offers extensive resources and links for students under headings such as: “Surviving as a Psychology Undergrad;” “Applying to Graduate Schools in Psychology;” “Becoming a Student Member of CPA;” and “Journals in Psychology.”

Instructional Materials Developed:

Developing a clinical casebook to be used in the Applied Behavioural Medicine course, including thorough psychological histories, developmental, family, social, educational, and vocational considerations, diagnostic impressions, clinical formulations, and treatment plans. Clinical cases will be used to accompany readings in order to illustrate both the developmental psychopathology as well as the clinical intervention strategies used in behavioural medicine.

Developed a Rorschach guidebook to be used by graduate students (particularly those early in their clinical training), who are using the Rorschach for clinical assessment and testing. This 17-page (single spaced) document is a summary of John Exner’s complex and obtuse 600 page text, and makes the Exner Rorschach more manageable.

Departmental Clinical Workshops:

Co-presented in a workshop for students in the clinical and clinical-developmental areas, York University, on applying for internships in clinical psychology, November, 1997.

Conducted a clinical workshop for students in the clinical area, York University, on cognitive-behavioural treatment strategies with depressed clients, March, 1998.

Conducted a clinical workshop for students in the clinical-developmental area, York University, on interventions for parents with behaviour-problem children, March, 1998.

Conducted a workshop for students in the clinical and clinical-developmental areas, York University, on the registration process for psychologists in Ontario, March, 1998.

Additional Supervision:
While at York, I continued to serve actively on the committees of 3 UMASS Boston graduate students.
