The final essay will integrate theoretical and empirical analysis for a selected group of topics on child socialization.   The required length will be 8 standard pages.

  • The final paper is due on  November 8.   It should be 8-10 pages in length and provide some comprehensive analysis of one of the following suggested topics. Other topics must be cleared with me before the end of October.

The following elements are important in a good sociology essay:

  1. A good introduction including a thesis statement
  2. A systematic argument- Theoretical, empirical, analytical
  3. A focused organizational scheme
  4. A brief but pointed analysis.
  5. Use ASA referencing and provide a bibliography
  1. Mass media and capitalism are two important influences on gendered behaviour. Discuss this notion with reference to parent and child interactions.
  2.  Violence can be understood through an exploration of the socialization of parents and children.  Discuss.
  3. Examine historical and cross-cultural patterns in childhood and family socialization.  What are the empirical and theoretical issues?
  4.  Focus on some of the problematic aspects of parental child rearing and some of the social problems that may result.
  5. Develop a paper explore one or more of the variables: Race, Class and Gender operationalizing at least two sociological approaches in the area of child/parent socialization.
  6. Explore the future of childhood in the second decade twenty first century.  Use the concepts Socialization and Social Change in your study.
